The San Diego Unified School District offers standards-based music instruction to students of all ages. General music instruction is provided for elementary students for those elementary schools who have selected music as their prep-time class. In addition, all elementary students are offered either 5th grade Intro to Music or 4/5 full grade level programs.  Music instruction at the secondary level focuses on elective band, orchestra, and choral classes, with introductory music appreciation and advanced AP music theory classes being offered at some sites. The district provides a multitude of performance opportunities such as showcases and honor ensembles, and encourages participation in city and area music festivals.
