Subject: 10/4 – ACTION REQUIRED: Nomination Process Now Open for 2018 Teacher of the Year

Dear Principals:

It is time once again to begin the Teacher of the Year process, which will be coordinated by the district’s Communications Department, in collaboration with SDEA.

Site nominations are coordinated by the school’s SDEA representative or principal designee. If you are not the site representative involved in coordinating this process, please let me know and I will remove you from the email distribution list. If there are multiple representatives at the site, please coordinate with one another

Administrative Circular No. 30, requesting Site Teacher of the Year nominations, is now posted online in Bulletins and Circulars, and will run in Newsline until the deadline.

Nominations are due to no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018. This year, we are accepting submission via an online form. Here is the link: https://www.sandiegounified.org/TOYNomination

Although participation is voluntary, we hope you will encourage involvement and lend your support by facilitating the nomination process. Each site SDEA representative (or principal designee, if there is no site SDEA representative) is asked to hold nominations and conduct a secret ballot to select the school’s Site Teacher of the Year. Please keep in mind that only teachers should be involved in the selection process.

We hope that you will take time to select a candidate that truly embodies the principles of a quality teacher and represents your school and the profession with pride. The district’s definition of a quality teacher aligns with the five core propositions the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards uses to measure teaching excellence.

Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

  • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  • Teachers are members of learning communities.

Site nominees, with the exception of preschool and CDC teachers, are eligible to apply for the District Teacher of the Year award, which can lead to County, State and National Teacher of the Year honors. As you may know, our 2017 high school Teacher of the Year Runner up, Jaime Brown, from San Diego High was named a County Teacher of the Year.

The district Teacher of the Year process culminates with a special Day of the Teacher celebration that will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2018. Please mark your calendars now. The location is still being determined.

I will once again be coordinating this year’s event. However, I will be out on maternity leave through January. In my absence, please contact Maria Shaw at mshaw@sandi.net or 619-725-5578.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Rodriguez
