Program Improvement Parent Notification Letters

The federally mandated School Program Improvement parent notification letters were mailed out this week to all families with students who attend a district school that is in Program Improvement (PI).

These are the same letters that have been mailed out since the inception of NCLB and the related Program Improvement, notifying parents of their choice to enroll their student(s) in a non-PI school during the current school year. Historically, the letters have been mailed out in the fall, when the state released the PI lists.  This year, however, the PI lists were released several months late, hence the letters were prepared and mailed out late as well. As in the past, principal names were added to the signature line of the letter for a more personalized communication.  We apologize for not informing principals prior to mailing the PI letters, and for any ensuing confusion this lack of communication may have caused.

The letter explicitly instructs parents who are interested in enrolling their child(ren) in a non PI school, to fill out an application which is then processed by Enrollment Options.  A link to the application is provided in the letter as well, in addition to a list of the non-PI schools that are available for the PI school attendees to apply to enroll in.  The letter does not instruct parents to contact non-PI (or PI receiving) schools directly.  Please direct interested parents to download and print the Program Improvement School Choice Application from the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options website at https://www.sandiegounified.org/school-choice-application.  Applications must be processed by the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options office. They can be submitted in person, by fax, by mail, or via email (eoptions@sandi.net); the address and fax number are listed on the application.  Enrollment is based on space availability, and NSEO will review all the applications and work with the PI receiving schools to accommodate enrollment.  We do not anticipate receiving many PI applications, based on prior years’ small numbers. District-level PI notification letters were mailed to parents last fall.

Notification of Errata:  It was brought to our attention that there was misinformation communicated in the PI letter.  Students attending schools in PI Years 2-5 may no longer apply for free tutoring/Supplemental Educational Services (SES).  The deadline for SES applications for the 2015-16 school year was October 23, 2015.  SES applications for the current year were mailed last fall to parents. (If parents wish to contact the SES department, please have them call 619-362-3340; the number indicated in the PI letter is incorrect.) We regret any difficulties this misinformation may have caused your staff.  Note that next year the district will not be offering any Supplemental Educational Services.

Please contact the Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options office with any questions at 619-725-7153.
