After-school Programs The YMCA offers several after-school programs. Located just across the street from Torrey Pines, the YMCA offers before and after-school day care at Torrey Pines, classes appropriate for grade school children in gymnastics, swim team, tennis and other sports. Several other classes are offered on a fee-basis at Torrey Pines. These include: Mad Science, art, drama and more!. Art Instruction Students receive formal art instruction as well as instruction in art history once a week. Students create works in a variety of media, including watercolor, collage, crayon and pastels. The art program is funded through parent donations and fundraisers sponsored by the Torrey Pines Foundation. Extra Support in Literacy and Math Additional tutoring by Torrey Pines teachers and UCSD students is available Wednesday afternoons for students needing a little extra help in Reading & Math. Choral Music Instruction All Torrey Pines students receive Choral Music instruction once a week. Students perform in two concerts per year. The Choral Music program is funded through parent donations and fundraisers sponsored by the Torrey Pines Foundation. Choice Program Students who live outside the Torrey Pines Elementary School boundaries may apply for admission to our school through the San Diego City Schools Choice program. Students are admitted on a space available basis. See the district website for additional information. Class Size Reduction Class sizes in grades K-3 are limited to 20 students per class. In addition, class size in the 4th & 5th grades is approximately 25 students. Computer Lab Students in grades 3-5 visit the computer lab 45 minutes a week to learn keyboarding, internet research skills, word processing and spreadsheets. The computer lab is funded through parent donations and fundraisers sponsored by the Torrey Pines Foundation. Everyone A Reader Everyone-A-Reader, in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education, joined together in 1995 to help turn the goal of every child reading by the end of third grade into a reality. In the program, tutors from UCSD and community volunteers work one-on-one with students. The children read books at their own level while the tutor listens and assists the child in learning new reading strategies. Food Service A nutritious breakfast is served daily between 8:45 AM and 9:00 AM. Lunch times are staggered and are between 11:30 PM and 12:40 PM depending on grade level. Children my bring a sack lunch from home or purchase a lunch. The school cafeteria is open daily. Parents are encouraged to purchase breakfast/lunch for a week or more at at time. Please bring breakfast/lunch money to the office in an envelope with the student's name and room number written on the envelope. Please keep your child's lunch account funded - there are no lunch loans! Fifth Dimension The Fifth Dimension program is a joint program between the University of California San Diego and Torrey Pines Elementary. With assistance from UCSD tutors, 5th grade students work on computer projects and games that reinforce classroom curriculum topics. Instrumental Music Interested 4th and 5th grade students may participate in a district sponsored instrumental music program. Instrumental music students perform two concerts during the year. Library Open in 2005, our library contains a collection of grade appropriate fiction and non-fiction titles. The library is open before school (beginning at 8:45) and at recess. In addition, students may visit the library with their classrooms. Books may be checked out for a period of 1 week. OCILE Torrey Pines students participate in the San Diego Unified School District off campus learning experiences. Students are grouped with students from other schools for one week and receive instruction off campus from San Diego Unified School District instructors. 4th grade students spend their OCILE week at Old Town. 5th graders spend their OCILE week at Balboa Park. Physical Education Students receive physical education instruction weekly from YMCA instructors. Students participate in age appropriate activities that promote general health and fitness. Safety Patrol 5th grade students may elect to participate in the school safety patrol. Safety patrol members assist other students in crossing the street. San Diego Police Department A San Diego Police Department Officer is assigned to our school. The officer oversees the safety patrol program, and visits classrooms to provide instruction in emergency procedures, stranger danger and bullying. For students in grade 5, instruction is also given in the harmful effects of alcohol and tobacco use. Special Assemblies & Programs Torrey Pines students enjoy a number of special assemblies and programs throughout the year. A partial list of assemblies and programs provided include: Pioneer Day, Colonial Day, the San Diego Lifeguard Assembly, International Culture Week and the San Diego Opera Presentation. Assemblies and programs may vary each year depending on availability. Special Education A district psychologist and resource teacher is available on request to evaluate students for learning disabilities. A district counselor as well as a speech & language pathologist are available to work with Torrey Pines students as needed. VEEP VEEP is the San Diego Unified School District Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program. Through the VEEP programs families may attend Torrey Pines instead of their neighborhood school. For more information, see the district website, www.sandi.net. YMCA Before & Afterschool Childcare The YMCA offers assistance in homework, arts and crafts, sports and academic games for children. Supervision is available from 6 AM to 9 AM and after school until 6 PM. Parents must register and meet certain criteria in order to qualify. There is a sliding scale fee for this program.
