At Tierrasanta Elementary School, students are expected to be seated in their classroom by 7:40am (second bell). If arriving at school before this time, then students will need to line up on the playground, on the south side of the classrooms, in their respective class lines. At 7:35am (first bell), teachers will come out to the playground and escort their students to the classroom.
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, classes are dismissed at 2:00pm. Thursdays are minimum days, and classes are dismissed at 12:00pm.
You should report your child's absence by 8:00am, on the first day of the absence, to the school office at 858-496-8255. If you call before 7:20am, a telephone recorder will take your message. You will need to provide your child's name, teacher name or classroom number, and the reason for the absence.
The school has several phone lines that can be used to call out on, but cannot be used to receive calls. If you receive a call from one of these lines and you return the call automatically from your phone, it will appear that the school phone is ringing and nobody is answering it. However, the call is not going through. You must return calls from the school by calling 858-496-8255.

Lunch with milk is available in the cafeteria daily for $1.75, but is free to qualifying students through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The most convenient way to pay for school meals is via the website, www.paypams.com where you can establish an account using your child's student ID or PIN. If you do not have this information, please call the Food Services Helpdesk at (858) 627-7330. Through the website, you may pay with a credit or debit card and monitor your child's balance at any time. It sometimes takes 2 to 3 days to credit your child's account, so please send a sack lunch during this 3 day period. Alternatively you may send cash or checks made out to Tierrasanta Elementary to cover the costs of meals weekly or monthly. Please write your child's name and room number on the envelope and note that it is to go toward meal payment. Each child has a separate account so it is very important to specify how much money is to go to each child if you are paying into more than one meal account. Please be sure there is money to cover your children's meals at all times. The office is unable to make lunch loans.
If your children bring lunch from home, they may purchase milk in the cafeteria for 50 cents. We do not sell soda to children. Please do not send sodas to school with your child's lunch. Sodas will be replaced with milk or water.
Yes. The Tierrasanta Elementary School cafeteria serves breakfast from 7:25am to 7:35am for $1.00. Please see how to pay above for payment methods.
SAY San Diego provides students at Tierrasanta Elementary School with a safe place to participate in academic support and enrichment activities after school. Families interested in participating in the SAY Program can contact Monica at the SAY office at (858) 565-4148 for fees and more information.
Children are expected to make up school assignments missed during an absence. If a child is going to be absent five or more days for personal reasons, the parent should request an “Independent Study Contract” from the child's teacher. This short-term contract allows children to complete academic requirements during an absence from school. This contract should be completed two weeks in advance of the absence.
Parents desiring a conference with their child's teacher should telephone the school office at 858-496-8255. The teacher will be notified of your conference request and will return your call as soon as possible.
It would be best to keep your child out of school if he/she is exhibiting a temperature greater than 100.5° (as taken by mouth). Your child should return to school 24 hours after the fever breaks.
Schools do their best job educating children when they have the parents as their partners. Parents who take an interest in the education of their children can have a strong, positive influence on their children’s success in school. Some of the many ways for you to be involved at Tierrasanta Elementary are:
- Contact our Volunteer Coordinator to learn about any activites for which help is needed.
- Volunteer in the classroom; share your career and/or talents. Contact the school office for a classroom volunteer form. All classroom volunteers must pass a TB test.
- Join the Parent Teachers Association (PTA). There are many events and projects throughout the year for which volunteers are needed to chair or to help. See PTA Projects for a list of opportunities and contact information.
- Select one of the options from the “Parent's Choice” packet or participate in one of our Fundraising efforts.
- Submit your name for election to the School Site Council and School Governance Team
Parents and other volunteers can get their Tuberculin (TB) skin tests done at the Public Health Dept., their private medical doctor, or the district TB clinic held at the San Diego City School's Maintenance and Operations Center the first Monday and Wednesday of every month. Some of the middle school nurses and the high school nurse are at their sites five days a week and may consider doing TB tests, but parents would need to call first and make arrangements with them.
Orders can be placed anytime through the office. You can preview all the Spirit Gear before you turn in your order form to the school office.
You can contact the principal, Lorelei Olsen, either by calling the school's office at 858-496-8255, or by stopping in the office and speaking with her secretary, Wendy Anderson, or by email (lolsen@sandi.net). Please leave a detailed message so that Ms. Olsen can provide a more informed response when following up with you, usually within 1 to 2 days of your request.
Office hours are 7:20am to 3:00pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, and from 7:20am to 1:00pm on Thursday. Our telephone recorder is on between 3:00 p.m. and 7:20 a.m. to record your messages. Messages are checked daily at 7:20 a.m. The school’s phone number is (858) 496-8255.
