Student Salutes
2004 Point Loma Graduate Wins Hispanic Heritage Award
On June 30, recent Point Loma graduate Jonathan Jourdane was honored along with six other national youth award winners at a special ceremony in Miami. Each year, the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation (HHAF) selects seven students, this year out of 7,000 applicants, who have demonstrated extraordinary levels of academic achievement, community leadership, and cultural pride. The Miami event was lead by Mistress of Ceremonies and Emmy-winning actress/singer Liz Torres. Students will also be celebrated in September during the Hispanic Heritage Awards, broadcast on NBC and Telemundo. Jonathan was chosen for his academic excellence, and as a result, he will receive $8,000 in educational grants and a laptop computer.
Immigration Museum Presents Essay Awards
At an awards ceremony hosted by the Immigration Museum of New Americans on June 29, 2004, 27 San Diego City Schools students were presented with awards by Superintendent Alan Bersin and others in celebration of their written work and creativity. Students submitted essays around the theme of "Family Histories: Migrants to the United States since 1945," and winners were awarded with scholarships ranging from $200 to $2,000. San Diego County Fair Selects Winners from San Diego City Schools
On June 29, at a special awards breakfast for the Student Showcase at the San Diego County Fair, art entries crafted by student artists from San Diego City Schools were honored for their talents. Included were Heather Delleney of Marston Middle, Best of Class for Tempera; Anthony Ward of Marston Middle, Best of Class for Tempera; Andrew Applegate of Madison High, Best of Class for Watercolor; Jenny Ngo of Scripps Ranch High, Best of Class for Collage; John Lofgren of Point Loma High, Best of Class for Ceramic Thrown; Allison Morin of Madison High, Best of Class for Ceramic Other; Whitney Engler of Scripps Ranch High, Best of Class for Other 3-D; N. Nguyen of Crawford High, Best of Class and Show for Cultural Heritage of Southern California; Jerald R. Camacho of Scripps Ranch High, Best of Class for Other CAD/Non-CAD Project; Charles Nixon of Mission Bay High, Best of Class for Educational Info Web; Jessica Graham of Mission Bay High, Best of Class and Show for Promo eComm Web; Dat Pham of Mission Bay High, Best of Class for Entertainment Web; Brittany Vardy of Mission Bay High, Best of Class for Linear Multi-Media; Troy Marcikic of University City High, Best of Class for Screen Printing Two or More Process Color; Adal Haclemariam of Wangenheim Middle, Best of Class for Traditional Black and White Photography; Ella Bailey of Wangenheim Middle, Best of Class for Traditional Black and White Photography; and Jessica Severn of Marshall Middle, Best of Class for Digital Composite Image Photography. Also among the winners were the Muirlands Middle yearbook and the Scripps Ranch High yearbook, which each won Best of Show and Class. Henry High's yearbook won Best of Class. Serra High's newspaper won Best of Class for its feature stories (see story below), and Pershing Middle won Best of Show for its literary magazine.
Serrandipity Wins Additional Journalism Recognition
For the second time in the past three months, Serrandipity, Serra High's school newspaper and its staff, has received honors for outstanding journalism. The San Diego County Fair honored Editor-in-Chief Charles Nguyen and Advisor Christine Edwards at a breakfast and tour at the Surfside Race Place facility at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on June 29. The newspaper was recognized with a blue ribbon for Outstanding Journalism and a special award for Best in Class for their newspaper feature pages. A plaque was presented to them in recognition of the quality work produced by the Serrandipity staff during the 2003-2004 year.
