Roosevelt Jr. High student Keishawn Cosby is being hailed as a hero by his bus driver, Jesus Peralta, for his instrumental role in a medical emergency. Keishawn, a special needs student, noticed that a fellow student, De'Ante Shelly, was choking on a large jawbreaker. Keishawn rushed up to the front of the bus to tell the driver and get his help. Jesus then stopped the bus and performed the Heimlich maneuver on De'Ante. Jesus is a driver with one of the district's contract carriers, First Student Inc.
A team of students from La Jolla High School has won first place in the 2003 Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) ExploraVision Awards competition. The competition challenges K-12 students to create the future by proposing scientifically valid technologies that could exist 20 years from now. An independent panel of scientists, engineers and science education leaders selected Harish Khandrika, Ryan Keane and Alexanda Kritchevsky's project, Creating Individual Chronobiology Profiles Using a Multisensor Chronobiometer, from almost 5,000 entries submitted by students from across the United States and Canada. The students will receive their award at the ExploraVision Awards Weekend to be held in Washington, D.C., June 11-15. Each student will receive a $10,000 savings bond and be given special sightseeing tours of the city. They'll be accompanied by two family members each, along with their teacher and coach, Martin Teachworth. Want to know more about these students' creation? Visit their project website.

La Jolla High School sophomore Marina Olevsky has been named the high school division winner in the second annual Igniting Creative Energy student challenge. The Challenge invited students to use their creative talents and communicate their ideas and actions about energy conservation and the environment through a number of different media including science projects, essays, stories, photographs, artwork and video. Marina wrote a poem titled, "Reclaim the Verdant Sheen," detailing her perspective on the deteriorating environment and a plea for improvement. Marina will accompany winners from the elementary, middle and teacher divisions on a trip to Washington, D.C., later this month.
