Staff
at De Portola Middle School recently hosted a "Breakfast
with the Principal" for military students to show
their appreciation for the students' families and their service
to the country. De Portola has 272 students who have at least
one parent in the military. The school's partner in education,
Cubic Corp., underwrote the cost of the food, sent
out invitations and helped set up the special event.

The Food
Services Department is giving away bicycles to middle
school students! In recognition of National Physical Fitness
and Sports Month, each middle school was given a 26"
Huffy ATB (all terrain bicycle) to give to a student in conjunction
with a physical fitness or sports activity. Methods of awarding
the bicycles varied. At Taft Middle School, Physical Education
director Dick Wesendunk held a Spring Challenge Run that spanned
two weeks of activities and involved both physical fitness
and mental exercises. Sixth grader Ramon Ortega finished first
to win the bicycle. Staff added a bicycle safety package including
helmet and lock. Bicycles were "purchased" using
incentive points acquired from food purchases throughout the
school year.

Several
Patrick Henry High School students recently hosted 11
fellow students from Germany for an entire month. The German
students, visiting from a high school in Dusseldorf, arrived
in San Diego on April 7. Each exchange student spent their month-long
stay in the home of a Patrick Henry student; most of whom will
in turn travel to Dusseldorf to stay with their German student
this summer. Patrick Henry German and French teacher Judy
Stout coordinates the program. (Read more about Judy in
the Hall of
Fame.) |
