Sunset View Elementary has been designated a National PTA School of Excellence, the first school in San Diego to receive this distinction. The National PTA also honored the school newsletter, the "Viewer," and parent editor Sandy Silverman, with multiple awards.

Three dedicated school nurses have been honored with the first ever PEAK (Prevention and Education Against Kavities) Award, sponsored by Health Net, which is working with San Diego City Schools to provide dental educational materials and curriculum for nurses, students and parents. The three nurses are
- Jessie Wallace, Hamilton Elementary. Jessie was selected for the award for providing dental screenings to 438 students in a school of 1,200 students and referring 142 students to receive dental care.
- Kathy Harkey, MacDowell Middle School. Kathy was honored for referring more than 100 6th graders a year for dental care.
- Denise Patton, Balboa Elementary. Denise has referred more than 300 students this school year for dental care.

San Diego Children's Dental Health Center also recognized several district school nurses. Cecelia Waters (Baker Elementary), Sara Bonnet (Jefferson & Wangenheim elementary schools), Kathy Speights (Birney Elementary), Bridget Auty (Euclid Elementary), Toni O'Connor (Jackson Elementary), and Pam Halstead (Edison & Carver elementary schools) received awards for participating in the "Meet the Needs" Dental Program. The program provides dental care to students who do not have dental insurance.

A recent U.S. Surgeon General's report showed that tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood illness, nationally, accounting for more than 50 million lost school hours each year to dental-related illness. Statewide, there is twice as much untreated tooth decay among children as there is nationwide.

District teachers who recently achieved National Board certification were honored and recognized by the Board of Education at its June 10th meeting. They were also feted aboard the "High Spirits" on June 14th in an annual celebration cruise event for National Board certified teachers hosted by the William D. Lynch Foundation for Children. Superintendent Alan Bersin and San Diego Education Association Terry Pesta were also along for the cruise. Including this group of newly-certified teachers, there are now 106 National Board certified teachers in the district. Read the list of newly certified teachers here. Achieving National Board certification is a demonstration of commitment to the improvement of teaching and learning in the classroom. Certification is achieved through a rigorous program of professional growth and development. For more information about National Board certification, visit the National Board website, or contact Velvet Wright at (858)496-1867 or vwright@mail.sandi.net.
