On Tuesday, May 11, at the 23rd Annual Day of the Teacher Celebration, San Diego City Schools honored our teachers and publicly announced the district's Teachers of the Year for 2004-05.

Health and Welfare Benefits

Employee groups and the district continue to work to maintain quality programs while addressing the rising costs of health and welfare benefits. All parties have agreed to share responsibility for maintaining quality benefits in light of these increases.

Summer Reading Achievers Program

All San Diego City Schools (SDCS) students in grades K-8 are invited to participate in the federal Summer Reading Achievers program this summer. They will join thousands of students at 10 locations nationwide and benefit from a summer reading program under the No Child Left Behind Act.

Ground Broken at Herbert Ibarra Elementary School
On May 4, students from Euclid Elementary and members of the Ibarra family helped break ground on the new Herbert Ibarra Elementary School.

Mental Health Resource Center Success Story
For the past year and a half, the district's Mental Health Resource Center (MHRC) has been providing mental health treatment to students in order to reduce violence and substance abuse, reduce emotional symptoms, improve behavior, raise achievement, and increase attendance.

ETS Testing Advertising Campaign in San Diego
On April 22, 2004, ETS began an advertising campaign in San Diego to encourage students, parents, teachers, education and community leaders to visit a website designed to provide information about student testing and achievement.
