The
district's 2003-2004 Classified Man and Woman of the Year
were honored in a special recognition event at the May 20th
Board of Education meeting. The Classified Woman of the Year,
Pam Chidgey, is an Administrative Assistant I at Patrick
Henry High School. The Classified Man of the Year is Ron
Wentworth, a Building Services Supervisor III at Ericson
Elementary. The first runner up for Classified Woman of the
Year is Bonnie Hunstable, Clerk Typist III in the Special
Education department's SEEC program office. The second runner
up is Deanne Maier, Financial Clerk, Scripps Ranch High
School. The first runner up for Classified Man of the Year is
Gustavo Padilla, a Computer Assistant at Central Elementary.
The second runner up is Oscar Lopez, Locker Room Attendant,
Madison High School. Congratulations to all these outstanding

Bruce
Dake, a senior school psychologist with the district's Special
Education team, has been named "Outstanding School Psychologist"
for the San Diego region by the California Association of
School Psychologists (CASP). Bruce was recognized for being
an aggressive advocate for "positive behavior interventions"
which led to legislation on the issue and a new state law. The
Outstanding School Psychologist award is presented annually
by CASP to school psychologists who are nominated for their
service to students, schools, communities and the profession. |

Several
district employees have been honored for their leadership
in coordinated school health programs in the recent countywide
"Healthy and Ready to Learn" event. Honorees
include Gary Petill, Director of Food Services; Kim
Bess, Director of Science; RoseMarie Lofgren, Program
Manager for Wellness/School Nursing; Shirley Culver,
Program Manager for the Mental Health Resource Center; and
John Miranda, Program Manager for Life Skills Education.

Whitman
Elementary teacher Ann-Marie Hornblower has been selected
as a winner of a "Hats Off to Teachers" Award. Honorees
are chosen from thousands of teachers countywide, nominated
by students, parents and co-workers for their exemplary professional
and personal characteristics. Ann-Marie will be presented with
a plaque of recognition at the next Board of Education meeting
May 27. |

Two
district biliteracy teachers will be honored at tomorrow's 5th
Annual Biliteracy Symposium, sponsored by the County Office
of Education. Toler Elementary teacher Linda Wilson and
Franklin Elementary teacher Lori Moore are being recognized
for their significant contributions in promoting biliteracy
for our students beyond the normal scope of their responsibilities.

An
estimated 5,000 people countywide participated in the recent
San Diego County Bike To Work Day. The event promotes
cycling as a viable form of transportation that can reduce traffic
congestion and air emissions. Dozens of district employees are
regular bike-to-workers, including district photographer Barry
"Biker" Ladwig, who commutes on two wheels to
the Eugene Brucker Education Center on a regular basis. For
