Mini Mural Project at Taft Explores Truth about Alcohol and Tobacco
In March, Taft Middle School Club Live members Kevin Wynne, Sam Merrill and Sean Merrill entered the 7th annual "Arts Reflecting Prevention" Mini Mural Contest. The contest, which included a guest speaker, was designed to increase awareness of the misleading messages the media gives youth regarding alcohol and tobacco. Entrants created a mini mural that portrayed the truth about alcohol or cigarette use and attended an awards ceremony in January. Thanks to STAR/PAL for co-sponsoring the contest with the Club Live partnership through the San Diego County Office of Education.

Student Poll Workers Earn Money for SDCS
During the Student Poll Workers Program on March 2, sponsored by the Registrar of Voters, 131 seniors from 10 San Diego City high schools volunteered as poll workers for the Presidential Primary Elections. Normally, poll workers receive a stipend for working at the polls. However, because the students participated as part of a service learning project, money earned was donated by the Registrar of Voters to each participating school's ASB for senior class activities. The students each worked a total of 15 hours and earned $8,365.00 for their schools. Congratulations to Clairemont, Henry, La Jolla, Madison, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Morse, Scripps Ranch, Serra and University City high schools and thank you to the seniors. For more information about the Student Poll Worker Program and to learn how students can participate in the November elections, please contact Nancy Hemmings in the Community Relations Department at (619) 725-5597 or nhemming@mail.sandi.net. |
