AOIT Students Mix with High Tech Professionals
On February 18, students from the Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) at Hoover High School attended the High Tech Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The San Diego Science Alliance, whose President, Gary Devan, is on the AOIT Business Advisory Board, sponsored the event which featured exhibits from over 50 local high tech companies. Students interacted with businesspeople from various companies and asked questions regarding careers in Information Technology (IT), as well as questions related to using the latest technologies.
Audubon Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday and Opens New Library
Students at Audubon Elementary School tipped their hats to Dr. Seuss and celebrated his 100th birthday by reading some of their favorite Dr. Seuss stories. To conclude the event, the school cut the ribbon on their brand-new library, funded by Proposition MM.
Crawford Dedicates New Library During Small Schools Open House
Crawford High School drew a large crowd for the dedication ceremony of their new library. Hundreds of parents and students gathered for the event, which served as a kick-off to the evening's community festivities promoting the small schools that will open at Crawford in Fall 2004. The new library is funded by Proposition MM.

Force 8 Project at Farb Speaks Out Against Violence
San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Safe Schools Unit and KFMB Channel 8 have partnered up to "Stop the Violence" on school campuses through the FORCE 8 (Focus on Resolving Conflict Everyday) Project. Most recently, the FORCE 8 Project landed at Farb Middle School, giving students the chance to receive 5 weekly workshops from SDCOE, and the opportunity to present Public Service Announcements (PSA's) to be aired on Channel 8 throughout the year. The PSA's focus on students' efforts toward stopping the violence on their campus. At Farb, two new solutions to stopping violence have been developed. Drop boxes are now available in classrooms where students can confidentially report concerns regarding school safety. This project hopes to open the lines of communication between the staff and students so that safety issues can be addressed. The second student effort toward stopping the violence is a play written by one of the sixth graders which describes issues brought up during the FORCE 8 Project. The play presents scenarios typically faced by middle school students and decisions that they have to make. For more information on the FORCE 8 Project, or to nominate your school, please visit www.kfmb.com/community/force8/force8.php.
Grand Opening of Power Up Café at Roosevelt
KUSI's live broadcast from Roosevelt Junior High on March 29 featured Rod Luck cutting the ribbon to open the Power Up Café, a new area of the cafeteria offering a soup and salad bar to students. Rod interviewed students, Roosevelt staff and Food Services staff about this exciting new addition to the school. Roosevelt is participating in a state grant called LEAF-Linking Education, Activity and Food. The grant focuses on increasing physical activity, providing nutrition education and encouraging students to eat fruits, vegetables and foods low in fat and sugar. The Power Up Café is one of the choices available to students participating in the School Lunch Program and promotes the LEAF program.

Memorial Middle School, also participating in the LEAF grant, will be opening their Power Up Café after spring break. With the success of the Kids' Choice Café at elementary schools and the Power Up Café at these schools, Food Services hopes to extend this choice to other secondary schools in the future. For more information, please contact Joanne Tucker at (858) 627-7316 or jtucker@sandi.net.
Music Abounds at Fletcher
Fifth-grade students get the chance to try a variety of different musical instruments during music lessons at Fletcher Elementary School. The yearlong class provides group lessons focusing on different instruments, including the trumpet, violin and clarinet.
Pajama Literacy Night at Hearst
Second-grade student, Tess Woodson (pictured here reading to her brother Caleb), and her peers pulled on their pajamas for a special reading event on March 19 at Hearst Elementary. The Family Reading Night and PJ Party, held in the school library, gave students a chance to cozy up to a good book, as well as listen to noted storyteller, "Aunt Betty" (a.k.a. Deboarh Ford). Parents and Hearst staff members also shared their favorite books with the 100+ people who attended the event. Everyone was encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring their favorite bear and blanket. The evening ended with hot cocoa and cookies.
Student Journalists Cover Underage Drinking at Annual Conference
On March 17, over 40 students, teachers, administrators, and policy makers attended the 4th Annual Student Journalist Press Conference hosted by the district's Counseling and Guidance Department's Safe and Drug Free School Program. Student journalists from district high schools, including Hoover, Morse, Point Loma, Scripps Ranch, SCPA (3 students-Laura Kass, Kari Cadel, and Malena Jaime- pictured here), Serra and University City, attended the event to cover issues related to local policies regarding underage drinking on both sides of the Tijuana border. Students will use the information learned at the conference to write feature articles for their high school newspapers.

The press conference was intended to empower district youth with accurate alcohol facts in order to help them make healthier choices and reduce their risk of harm. As in years past, local television, radio, and newspapers covered the event. The press conference was held during lunch, in order to minimally impact the regular school day. Rubio's restaurants generously donated food and provided lunch for attendees. The district appreciates that Rubio's shares in our dedication to educating students so that they are able to make healthy lifestyle choices.
Student to Student Program Tells the Real Hazards of Smoking
Students at Henry High School are on the front lines of combat against underage smoking. The Student to Student program, developed by school nurse Susan Efting, gives these high school students a chance to speak out about the hazards of smoking to 5th and 7th grade students. The 8-year-old anti-smoking program was recently featured on Channel 8's "Cool School of the Week." The segment showed Henry students presenting the program to Hearst Elementary School students on March 30. For more information on the program, please contact Nurse Susan Efting at (619) 286-0452
