Advanced Placement Training for Teachers
Both new and experienced Advanced Placement (AP) teachers can benefit from the AP Summer Institutes for Teaching Professionals workshop at Cal State, San Marcos, taking place this summer from July 26-30. Participants will enjoy a week of challenging and worthwhile training that will help them meet the special instructional needs of students, in both course content and pedagogical knowledge. They will interact with highly experienced AP teachers who are trained and endorsed by The College Board and will experience an enriching forum for sharing ideas and strategies with other AP teachers. Above all, teachers will return to the classroom re-energized and eager to teach- equipped with fresh resources, new materials and practical strategies that can be easily incorporated into daily lesson plans. CACSE Nomination Form Now Available
The Community Advisory Committee for Special Education (CACSE) is currently accepting nominations for recognition awards in the area of special education. Nominees should be individuals who have contributed in an outstanding way to the students in San Diego City Schools who are currently receiving special education services, and can be teachers or students who help other students. Change the Life of a Foster Child
Volunteer San Diego's abused and neglected children need you! There are over 7,500 children in foster care who are waiting for help. Become a child advocate today, and serve as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). You'll be glad you did! All necessary training is provided. Congressional Art Competition
High school students who live in the 53rd District, including San Diego City Schools students, are invited to participate in the Congressional Art Competition. The winning student will receive two free round-trip airline tickets to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Washington, D.C. and have his/her piece hung in the Cannon Tunnel for one year. District Training for Staff on Increasing Parent Involvement
In April and May, the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center (2375 Congress St., Old Town) is sponsoring training sessions for community assistants, volunteer parent coordinators and parent leaders on increasing parent involvement. Participants will learn how to increase parent attendance at school events, organize effective childcare during parent meetings, develop parent leaders, and explain what parents need to know about the "No Child Left Behind" Act. Elementary Mathematics Specialist Certificate Program
San Diego State University (SDSU) offers a 2-year Elementary Mathematics Specialist Certificate Program designed specifically for elementary school teachers. The program consists of 12 units of coursework in mathematics geared to particular grade levels, and focuses on helping teachers acquire a deeper understanding of elementary-level mathematics and the skills needed to teach mathematics effectively. All courses are offered at a reduced tuition level, and SDSU is seeking outside funding to provide stipends. Congressional internships are an excellent opportunity to learn about public service and gain valuable work experience. Interns will field constituent inquiries and comments, research and provide information to constituents, and assist members of Davis' staff with a variety of projects and events. Literacy Peer Coach/Staff Developer Orientation for Certificated Staff
Any permanent certificated staff member who is interested in becoming a certified Literacy Peer Coach/Staff Developer in San Diego City Schools (SDCS) is encouraged to sign up for the certification process. SDCS and San Diego State University will be holding an orientation meeting on Thursday, April 29, at 4:30 p.m. at the SDSU City Heights Community Center, Suite 100 (4283 El Cajon Blvd., 92105). Make-it/Take-it Open Lab for Parents and Staff
The Make-it/Take-it Open Lab at the Harold J. Ballard Parent Center (2375 Congress St., Old Town-formerly Fremont Elementary) has adopted new hours in order to accommodate parent schedules. The lab will be open on Mondays from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m. and every other Friday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Click here for the calendar: English and Spanish.
The Make-it/Take-it Lab provides:
Self-directed activities to use at home with children (pre-K to grade 5)
Study aids to support learning (K to grade 5)
Computers with Internet access
Ellison cutters for making patterns and letters of the alphabet
Free childcare for young children up to age 5
Materials in English and Spanish
Parents and teachers are invited to drop in during lab hours. No pre-registration is needed. Master of Education Online Course
The College Network has partnered with Regis University to offer an accredited Master of Education degree. The program blends independent study, online learning and practical experience for credentialed teachers who desire professional growth. The online course consists of 12 eight-week sessions that allow graduate students to focus on one class at a time and earn a M.Ed. degree in less than two years. The program has no GRE or MAT requirements. Paid Summer Internships at Scripps Research
During the 2004 Bank of America Summer Internship Program, five selected middle and high school science teachers will conduct basic biomedical research in a laboratory under the supervision of a Scripps Research scientist. This program emphasizes the scientific process, research planning, bench experience, experimental design, data analysis and interaction with laboratory personnel. Participants will attend weekly events with fellow teacher interns throughout the course of the summer and will present their work along with teacher, undergraduate and high school student interns at the final session. Teachers are paid $14.50/hour (40 hrs/wk) for the eight-week program, from June 21 to August 13. The deadline to apply is this Friday, April 23. Statistics Course for Teachers
Want to learn more about statistics? San Diego State University (SDSU) is offering a one-unit course, Math 385 - Measuring and Interpreting Data, designed especially for teachers. This class focuses on topics related to the California Mathematics Standards and middle-level (grades 4-8) curriculum, and is only open to practicing, credentialed teachers. Classes will meet on five consecutive Thursdays, starting May 6, from 4:15 to 7:00 p.m. at a convenient location near SDSU. The cost is only $60, and participants will earn 1 unit of credit. Study Exchange Trip to Ecuador
Rotary International is sponsoring a one-month study exchange trip to Ecuador for local educators to learn about another educational system in November 2004. This "Group Study Exchange" program connects U.S. and Ecuadorian educators for cross-cultural learning. All major travel costs are provided by Rotary. Volunteer for Earth Day!
It's almost time, and every year, over 500 folks, just like you, participate as volunteers with San Diego Earth Works. This service is for a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for all living things. There are three event opportunities in honor of Earth Day 2004, including Earth Fair 2004 this Sunday, April 25 at Balboa Park; VIP (Very Important Planet) Reception and EARTH Awards on May 12; and Green Built Tour in the fall of 2004. Volunteer positions for Earth Fair include set-up, break-down and clean-up, transportation, stage assistants, information, first aid, and logistics. The Earth Awards will need volunteers for logistics, set-up and clean-up, cashiers and silent auctioneers. Volunteers for the Green Built tour are needed as docents along with logistics, set-up and clean-up crews.
