Alexandra Robinson Named to SBF Advisory Board
The director of Transportation Services at San Diego City Schools, Alexandra Robinson, has been named to the School Bus Fleet's (SBF) Editorial Advisory Board. Alexandra's contributions to transportation as well as the visibility of her expertise as shown by publications she has authored, presentations she has led, and general advocacy for her field, demonstrate that she is well-suited for such a prestigious position. Congratulations, Alexandra!
Bersin Named Administrator of the Year
The California Music Educators Association-Southern Border Section has named San Diego City Schools Superintendent Alan Bersin the Administrator of the Year. The Bersin family was present on March 28 as Superintendent Bersin was honored along with other awardees at the Administrators' Dessert following the San Diego Symphony's "Hot Shots" concert. The concert included a performance by Lisa Kim, a freshman at La Jolla High School and a winner in the Young Artist Competition. School Board Trustee Katherine Nakamura was also present at the concert and award ceremony.
Dr. Susan Weinshanker Selected as Outstanding Educator
The California League of High Schools (CLHS) has selected San Diego City Schools teacher Dr. Susan J.K. Weinshanker of Mission Bay High School as one of ten Outstanding Educators in Region 9. She will represent the educators in San Diego and Imperial Counties as a finalist for this award. The CLHS Educator of the Year Award is an honor bestowed upon individuals who have made exemplary contributions to high school education within the state of California. The ten finalists, including Dr. Weinshanker, will be honored at an annual EOY dinner in April.
Cay Casey Receives USD Alumni Award
San Diego City Schools nurse, Cay Casey, who has worked with deaf and hearing-impaired youngsters for more than 20 years, was honored on April 3 at the University of San Diego (USD) Alumni Association's 10th annual Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Awards. The black-tie gala event honors alumni who have achieved outstanding success in their field. "Cay has a special gift for working with young children with special needs and helping make sure they can develop to their full potential," said Jack Kelly, USD's director of Alumni Relations. "She truly represents USD's spirit of excellence and service to the community."
Madison Robotics Team Receives Donation
Madison High School's Robotics Team was fortunate to receive a generous donation of $5,000 from Betty Clarquist to help pay for the team's trip to Atlanta, where they will compete in the For Inspirational and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Competition. Mira Mesa First to Show the Student Discipline Video
On March 24, Mira Mesa High School became the first school to show the district's new Student Discipline Video to students. Great job, Mira Mesa! All secondary school students must view the video, as mandated by the Board of Education. Videos and printed materials were sent to schools on March 16. School Nurse of the Year Awarded to Susie Horn-Sosna of SDCS
When the California School Nurses Organization (CSNO) held their annual conference in Sacramento Feb 25-29, Susie Horn-Sosna, one of the district's most dedicated school nurses, was named the San Diego/Imperial Section School Nurse of the Year. Susie was honored at the awards banquet during the conference. Susie has been in the district for 29 years, and has worked as a state preschool and elementary nurse practitioner, a special education team nurse, the coordinator of district immunization and CHDP programs, a member of the Medi-Cal collaborative, the coordinator of a federal grant for the PARD project, and a district project nurse involved in training new nurses. Susie holds a monthly TB Clinic for district employees and volunteers. In addition, Susie has been the Chair of the Nurse Governance Team for SDCS nurses. During the conference, Susie was installed as CSNO President for San Diego/ Imperial. Congratulations, Susie, for being recognized for all of your hard work!
SDCS Recognizes Commission for Arts and Culture
On March 23, the City of San Diego's Commission for Arts and Culture's Executive Director, Victoria Hamilton, was recognized at the San Diego City Schools (SDCS) Board Meeting with a commendation for her department's commitment to arts education and support of the collaborative project, San Diego Arts Education Partnership.

The mission of San Diego City Schools is to improve student achievement by supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.
