- The Friends
of the S. D. Public Library, a volunteer group which helps
the library system in many ways, is having a special used book
sale just for teachers. The sale will be held Saturday, March
1, 9:30 - noon, at
the University Heights branch library, 4193 Park Blvd. A supporter
of the Friends organization has arranged for the books to be sold
as a two-for-one to teachers with an I.D. This will allow teachers
to get two hardcover books for a dollar, or two paperback or children's
books for 50 cents. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the library's
children's collections citywide.
- The Association
of African American Educators (AAAE) is hosting its AAAE
Annual Conference, March 7 from 3 - 9 p.m. and March 8 from
8 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the Mission Valley Hilton. The conference
will provide an opportunity for educators, parents and students
to hear from researchers and motivational speakers who present
strategies that are directed to the unique learning styles of
African American students, and participate in discussions and
problem-solving sessions. Participants are expected to take strategies
back to school sites and communities for implementation in plans
and to improve teaching and learning practices. A specific focus
will be paid to the academic achievement of African American students
who are among the lowest achievers. The conference fee is $125
for both days. For more information and to make a reservation,
please contact Dr. Juel Moore at (619) 286-8769 or email gpjamoore@aol.com.
