San Diego Unified adopted the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) resolution in 2003 and implemented the CHPS standards in the Prop MM new schools, including Cherokee Point and Ibarra elementary schools.
As a result, CHPS honored the district’s CHPS Oversight Committee with a 2007 Green Apple Award for excellence in teamwork in building and operating high performance schools.
The CHPS program focuses on the design and construction of new school sites, and operations of existing facilities. Measures in high performance schools include: heating/ventilating/air-conditioning (HVAC) system using high efficiency equipment, using high efficiency lamps and ballasts, optimizing the number of light fixtures in each room, incorporating controls that ensure peak system performance, and successfully integrating electric-lighting and day-lighting strategies.
“The criteria for green buildings are to significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and on the building occupants,” said J. Naish, the district’s energy/utility coordinator. “Green building design and construction practices address: sustainable site planning, safeguarding water and water efficiency, energy efficiency, conservation of materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.”
