Becoming America's Best
Slowing the Decline in Enrollment

Stemming the Enrollment Decline Ongoing efforts to showcase the best that San Diego Unified schools have to offer students, families and communities are paying off. For the second year in a row, the rate of declining student enrollment continues to slow. Here are some of the latest efforts to welcome new students to our classrooms:

Innovative Programs Offer Choices – Innovative and highly-sought-after programs are on the rise. An increase in K-8 schools, new magnet programs plus College, Career & Technical Education offerings are among the many programs attracting parents and students throughout San Diego.

Central Enrollment Center is a Success – This summer’s pilot Central Enrollment Center exceeded expectations. Center staff enrolled 1,353 (pre-K – 12) students into 161 schools across the district. The center provided convenient one-stop registration for families and contributed to a smoother enrollment period at school sites on and before the first day of classes.

Superintendents Reach Out to the Community – Area superintendents are making the rounds with recent media appearances and participation in local community events. TV news highlights include updates on enrollment efforts, new school openings and exciting school programs.

A member of the Class of 2020 Schools Take Center Stage – Watch the news on any given day and at least one of our schools is being featured for outstanding achievement. From academic awards and teachers who make a difference, to sports programs and inventive classroom activities, our schools are taking center stage with San Diego viewers.

Focus on Being Family Friendly – More schools are creating environments where students, families and staff feel welcomed and valued. A recent parent survey reported that more than 90% of parents feel welcome and respected at school.

Thinking Outside the Box - The district provided a viable solution for more than 100 students and several teachers when Harborside, a downtown private school, closed its doors. Washington Elementary rolled out the welcome mat and proved it could live up to private school expectations.

Realtors Get a Closer Look – Outreach efforts to local realtors have been well-received. A feature article in San Diego Realtor magazine reached more than 11,000 realtors. It was followed by district participation in the San Diego Association of Realtors annual tradeshow where attendees received information about SDUSD to share with home buyers and renters.
