Colors Bloom at Central Elementary

Central Elementary School has become a botanical oasis amid the concrete and buildings of City Heights. Everywhere you look, flowers are blooming, adding a splash of color to the campus. Alongside some of the buildings, there’s a picket fence protecting gladiolas growing in planters. Just outside the lunch court shelter, there are large concrete planters that contain trees, shrubs and flowers that provide color as well as shade. Just beyond some of the classrooms is a row of stalwart sunflowers amid a courtyard. Near the office, brightly painted tulips decorate planters bearing trees, ferns and other shade plants. Staff members, Michael Shefcik and Agustine Lozano, lead the beautification efforts with help from students and staff. According to Mintie Bowman, site operations specialist, the school could not have accomplished this endeavor without donations from City Farmer’s Nursery and the Rice Family Foundation.
