District Receives $250,000 Best Buy Teach Award

BestBuy Teach Awards San Diego Unified School District is the 2007 recipient of the $250,000 Best Buy Teach Award. The only school district in the U.S. to receive this honor, the selection was based on the strength of our Unsung Heroes program, a district-wide initiative to deliver more authentic learning experiences for students. Through the use of consumer electronics, students celebrate community heroes by interviewing them and then digitally documenting their stories of heroism and courage.

The $250,000 Teach Award will fund the initial implementation of Unsung Heroes at five schools: Crawford High School Complex, Hoover High School, Mann Middle School Complex, Wilson Middle School, and Clark Middle School.

Superintendent Cohn thanked Best Buy for its generous donation, noting the skills learned in the Unsung Heroes program will help our students be better citizens as adults.

"Mastering these excellent 21st-century skills will prepare our students to add value to their community," he said.

In addition to the grant to the district, Hoover High senior Carolina Bracamonte received a $10,000 college scholarship from Best Buy. Only 16 seniors nationwide received the award.
