Support Our Troops Week
Showing Our Support for the Military and Their Kids in Our Schools

Support Our Troops A postcard-writing campaign, art contest and chance to show off your patriotic colors are among the district activities marking “Support Our Troops Week,” May 21-25.

Honoring troops overseas, the district’s many military families, and our employees who are veterans, the event is being sponsored by the Xerox Corporation. The recognition is not only for enlisted men and women around the world – it’s also about their children – our students - in our schools.

“You’re acknowledging the sacrifices our children endure,” said Marine wife Barbara Shortill, who has two children attending Mason Elementary. “Our children can stand tall and feel proud, knowing that their teachers and classmates are there for them.”

The big event of the week is a postcard-writing effort. The goal is to have one postcard from every student in the district sent to a member of America’s military. Teachers are encouraged to set aside time to allow students to write a personal message to a member of the military.

Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms on “Show Your Support Day," May 22. Also that day, winners of the student art contest will be announced at the Board of Education meeting. Employees who didn’t serve in the military, along with students, are encouraged to wear patriotic colors that day.

“We’re asking district employees, students – everyone – to wear red, white and blue on May 22,” said Dorothy Harper, the Associate Superintendent for Parent, Student and Community Engagement.
