Out And About
Children and Adults Admiring Art Hundreds of talented student artists, along with their proud families and friends, crowded the halls of the Education Center at the opening reception of the Annual Student Art Exhibition on March 7. The exhibit, coordinated by the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Department, includes 1,100 pieces of art from K-12 students throughout the district and will be on display through April 9.
Planet Protectors Collect More Recyclables Planet Protectors are students who help the environment by recycling paper, saving energy and conserving water. Students can win prizes and earn money for their school by recycling beverage containers, while learning about recycling, conservation and waste reduction. Members of the Planet Protectors Club at Birney Elementary collect beverage containers from around their campus and the Eugene Brucker Education Center.
Beck D'Aoust Spreckels Elementary School Student Council wanted to motivate fellow students to be good stewards of their school, so it created coupons to give to students who go above-and-beyond to clean up the campus. The coupons are raffled off at Super Star assemblies, and students can redeem them for discounts at the student store. Becky D'Aoust, counselor and Student Council advisor, holds a poster promoting the beautification project and a coupon that rewards students for cleaning up Spreckels campus. She reports that the project has spurred students to participate in other service activities.
