District Earns National Energy Star Award

Energy Star The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named San Diego Unified School District as a 2007 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for outstanding energy management and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Board President Luis Acle accepted the award on behalf of the district at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 21.

SDUSD, an ENERGY STAR partner since 1998, is being honored for smart energy management practices and investments throughout its operations that result in significant energy and financial savings.

“The success of SDUSD in proactively managing energy use is a model for businesses across the country,” said Bill Wehrum, acting assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. “Because buildings contribute about 20 percent of our national greenhouse gas emissions, effective energy management helps the bottom line and protects our environment.”

The 2007 Partner of the Year Awards recognize efforts to use energy efficiently in facility operations and to integrate superior energy management into overall organizational strategy.

“Energy management is a critical part of our day-to-day operations,” said J. Naish, the district’s coordinator of Utilities/Energy Management. “Now more than ever, energy efficiency is just smart business. Through our partnership with ENERGY STAR we see the ongoing fiscal and environmental benefits of superior energy management.”
