Board Approves 8th Grade Retention/9th Grade Intervention Program
Every student’s performance in academic core subjects—English, math, history, and science—matters now more than ever before.
The Board of Education approved a new eighth grade retention program on January 23. The goal is to increase students’
preparation for and successes in high school courses and reduce dropout rates. Eighth graders who
fail two or more core subjects will be retained in middle school and will not go on to high school this fall. If a parent
prefers, an alternative to retention is available. The failing student will be placed in a ninth grade intervention
program, which will provide concentrated instruction in the core subjects as well as study skills. Letters are being
distributed to all middle school parents explaining the program.

School Police Keep an Eye on Safety
The Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) of School Police is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining several
districtwide safety programs that meet the needs of our students, schools and employees. The CPU team, which includes a
sergeant and four community service officers, offers the following programs:
- School Police Volunteer Patrol (SPVP)
- Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE)
- School Watch Program
- Identi-kit Program
- Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)
- Crimestoppers
In addition, CPU offers monthly safety tips. This month’s tip is to advise all children to follow the safest paths, when
walking to and from school. Walking in areas that are visible by homeowners, housing complexes, pedestrians and vehicle
traffic is recommended. The use of crosswalks and pedestrian controlled intersections is strongly advised. For more
information about CPU, call (619) 725-7013.
