Our Schools As Jewels:
Walter J. Porter Elementary School North Opens January 16

Construction crews worked feverishly to finish the north campus of Walter J. Porter Elementary School so that students and teachers could move in January 16. Porter North is located on the former Kennedy Elementary School site. It’s the twin school to Porter South.

Evva Cross, principal of both campuses, and her staff prepared for the move and anxiously waited for the contractor to turn over the keys. Porter South opened in January 2006, so staff and students knew how to make the mid-year move a successful one. Principal Cross has high expectations for the twin schools.

“We want to make sure that our academic program mirrors the high quality, state-of-the-art facility we have,” Cross said. “We want our instructional program and student achievement to be stellar.”

The students who made the mid-year move were the kindergarteners, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders. The fourth- through sixth-grade students moved from old classrooms that were part of the former Kennedy Elementary School. The kindergarteners moved from Porter South. The "6 to 6" Program also moved from the south to the north campus.

Principal Cross said the space that was freed up on the south campus will house the art, music and physical education program. It will also provide space for the resource specialist and other support staff/programs.

“This (the new school) provides a more positive atmosphere and ambience for the students and teachers,” Cross said. “It helps build confidence, self-esteem and self-worth among the students. It also shows that the district recognizes the value of the students and the community because it is willing to make the investment in the facility.”

Porter North is one of two new Prop. MM schools that opened in the 2006-07 school year. Normal Heights Elementary School opened in September. Seven other schools are already open, five more are still under construction. Two are in development.
