Geno Flores as St. Nick Deputy Superintendent Geno Flores (right) visited Meagan McDonald’s second grade class at Carson Elementary on December 6 in celebration of Saint Nicholas’ Feast Day. Saint Nicholas lived in the fourth century and is best remembered for leaving bags of gold on the doorsteps of those less fortunate. St. Nicholas' charitable and philanthropic spirit lives on through Volunteer San Diego’s annual A Visit from St. Nick program. On December 6, the non-profit organization delivered 2,700 backpacks filled with books, toys and other gifts to K-2 students at nine San Diego County Title 1 schools. In addition to Carson, students from Encanto, Marshall and Perkins Elementary received backpacks.
Serra High School served as the backdrop for a news conference held by State Superintendent Jack O’Connell (podium left) to announce that San Diego County schools will be reimbursed $1.76 million in state funding for financial losses from the historic 2003 wildfires. County Superintendent Randy Ward (podium right) accepted the check for $1.76 million that will be distributed to districts throughout the county. SDUSD is getting $764,196, the largest amount of any district in the county.

Two teams from SDUSD participated in the second annual Dragon Boat Festival held recently at Mission Bay Park. "Get Schooled" team (left) members work at the Education Center and the "Wrecking Crew" team (right) members are from Maintenance & Operations. The two teams battled it out on the water for a team-building experience. Dragon boat racing, an ancient sport more than 2,500 years old, is the second most popular sport in the world after soccer. For information, contact Sandra Chong, Assistant General Counsel, at schong@sandi.net.

Students from Nicci Krey’s Advanced Algebra class (below) at Taft Middle School are going high tech. Students produced podcasts using a challenging math problem. Working in groups, students first solved the problem. The next step was to write and edit a math script. Finally, the students published a recording of how to solve the problem in an interesting way, using a program called Garageband. Students had the opportunity to show-off their projects at a special school night held at the Apple Store in Fashion Valley Mall in November.

Muir Global Schoolchildren John Muir School’s (left) partnership with Global Schoolhouse has resulted in visitors from as far away as Uzbekistan, Taiwan, and Ghana dropping by at various times. On November 30, thirteen students from Beijing visited Muir along with Global Schoolnet Founder Yvonne Andres. The visiting students were anxious to see American schools and to practice their English. Muir students took the visitors to several classes and learned that kids are kids, no matter their nationality. Tetherball during recess and popping popcorn at the end of the tour were the popular activities of the visit.
Harriet Tubman Science Fair Harriet Tubman Village Charter (right) held a mini science fair in December. Students demonstrated their love for science by presenting projects that were creative and innovative. The fair included PowerPoint presentations, scientific demonstrations and student collaboration. Projects ranged from chemical rockets to tornado simulators, candy creations and chemical reactions. Harriet Tubman’s third Annual Science Fair will be held in June.
Fourth and fifth grade students at Dingeman Elementary (below) savor the applause at the end of their performances in “Jack and the Giant.” Drama, music and comedy were all part of the fun family play. The play was another entertaining production by the directing team of teachers Garner Saguil and Rochelle Schwartz. The teachers have been working together on student productions for 11 years and are recipients of the prestigious Bravissimo Award for the best elementary school drama in San Diego.

Dr. Cohn at the Somali Outreach Group Meeting Superintendent Carl Cohn (right) met with the Somali Outreach Group at its December meeting held at Mann Middle School. The group, which includes both community organizations and district personnel from various departments, was formed in 2004 in response to a request from the local Somali community to create a dialogue with school personnel to promote positive outcomes for Somali students. In addition to Dr. Cohn’s visit, the meeting included the presentation of Somali Family Service of San Diego Achievement Awards to Board member Shelia Jackson, Translation Services Supervisor Ana Morales, and District Somali Translator Ahmed Abdille.
