 Becoming America's Best
Kearny Teacher Tops in Region

Omar Garcia, Architecture/Design-CADD instructor at the Kearny High Educational Complex Construction Technology Academy, is
the 2006-07 Educator of the Year for the California League of High Schools, Region 9. His selection was based on his
innovative spirit as an effective advocate for high school reform. He received his award at the organization’s annual
award banquet held in November.
Born in Mexico City, Garcia graduated from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico with a bachelor’s degree in
architecture. For the past nine years, he has been working with the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) as a Computer
Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD) instructor for the district, as well as a CADD Consultant for several architectural
and engineering firms. He was one of the first teachers selected to be on the district’s high school reform design team
for the development of the first autonomous career themed small schools.
Garcia was recently selected by the National Project Lead The Way (PLTW) as a trainer and is working as a master teacher
of civil engineering and architecture at several universities in the country. He continues to contribute to the success
of the small high school model, on the Kearny campus and beyond.
His students’ projects have won awards and acclaim from groups such as the National Association of Women in Construction
and the Center City Development Corporation. He has demonstrated a remarkable ability to motivate students from diverse
backgrounds.
“There is no other teacher who has made a more profound effect in my life,” said a young Hispanic student. “I once struggled
to earn a 1.13 GPA and now have a 3.38 overall GPA. Mr. Garcia expects no less than perfection from his students.”
