Students from the John Muir School took top honors in the International Schools CyberFair 2006, a Global Schoolhouse project. This annual program brings together more than one million students from across 109 countries. Muir students in grades K-12 studied local environmental concerns and promoted awareness and action. They wrote about and photographed their environmental activities to create a website. Muir School also partnered with Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast, Ghana. Both schools were honored for “Best Future Focused Project.” To learn about the Global Schoolhouse project, go to www.globalschoolnet.org.

Mann Middle School hosts the monthly meetings of the Somali Concerns Steering Committee, a group formed in June 2004 in response to a request from the local Somali community to create a dialogue with city schools personnel to promote positive outcomes for Somali students. The committee is coordinated by the Race and Human Relations and Advocacy Department and brings together central office representatives, school site personnel, community agencies and invited guests. Since its inception, the committee has increased outreach to community agencies, created links between the Crawford Cluster Schools and developed culturally-appropriate communication materials for Somali parents. The committee’s actions have helped students with their socialization into city schools and improved student achievement.
