Four San Diego City schools were among 11 schools in the county to receive Chargers Champions School Physical Education Grants for 2006. Scripps Ranch High received the largest award, $80,000, which will be combined with other funds to install an all-weather, state-of-the-art synthetic athletic field. Mann Middle received $30,000, Hage Elementary received $20,000 and Paradise Hills Elementary received $15,000 from the San Diego Chargers to honor each school’s dedication to improving physical fitness and nutrition programs.
Jeannine Rivero, from Fulton Elementary School, and Carole A. Harris, from Cubberley Elementary School, are the May winners of the district's Recycling Office recycling contest. Each received a Jamba Juice plastic mug with free smoothie, $10 Whole Foods gift certificate, Conservation Fund magnet and SDCS pocket calendar. Interested in participating in the contest? Paradise Hills Elementary received the largest check of all the schools in its area, including secondary schools, that participated in the Washington Mutual ‘WaMoola for Schools’ rewards program. The check for $1,220 was presented to Superintendent Cohn during his visit to the school on Tuesday, May 30.

Director of Science and Technology Kim Bess and Pershing Middle School science teacher Kellie Marcarelli were honored by the San Diego Science Alliance (SDSA) during its tenth annual Partnership Awards in March. Kim received the Administrator Partnership Award and Kellie was honored with the Teacher Partnership Award. “The Partnership Award recipients for 2006 represent the outstanding efforts that are underway within our schools and community to engage students and inspire them to excel in science and related courses,” said Mickie Beyer, executive director of SDSA.
LEADS (Learn, Explore, Achieve, Discover and Serve) at the San Diego High Educational Complex has been named a recipient of the 2006 Inspired Education Award from PLATO Learning and the Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents (ALAS). The award seeks to enhance student achievement and technology literacy in high-need schools. LEADS will receive a complete instructional technology program, including 20 wireless laptop computers, comprehensive professional development, 200 software licenses per year (for three years), software training for teachers, customized or pre-designed software programs, and technology support. “We look forward to having PLATO Learning as an academic partner, especially in algebra, an area of particular need,” said Principal Scott Giusti. “Together, we can give our students the academic foundation they need to succeed in school and in life.”
Elizabeth Kramer, planning analyst in Standards, Assessment and Accountability, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and do research at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú during the 2006-07 academic year. She will teach an innovative course on international business development and provide research support to the university’s business incubator program. She is one of approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad for the upcoming academic year through this prestigious scholarship program.
Mira Mesa High wrestling coach Jon Talbot is one of eight California coaches to receive the Lifetime Service Award from the California chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. A plaque will be placed at the Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater Oklahoma with eight other National recipients.
Lafayette Elementary School collected more used plastic shopping bags than any of the other 87 schools in the county that participated in the latest Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge. Lafayette won a prize of $1,500. It also earned about $1,700 for gathering nearly 5,600 pounds of bags from January to April. “The (competition) brought the Lafayette School community together for a common goal: caring for the Earth,” said Principal Heidi Eastcott. Other top schools in the county included Loma Portal Elementary.
