District students were treated to a series of assemblies focused on the dangers of tobacco use. At the elementary level, “Plumkin’s Choice,” a highly interactive puppet show, visited Field, Johnson, Lafayette and Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary Schools. The show focuses on tobacco education and prevention messages for elementary students. It stresses the importance of making healthy food choices, healthy recreational choices and healthy stress-relieving activities. Students in grades K-3 learn that tobacco is an unhealthy drug that damages the human body. Students help a puppet named Plumkin make three healthy choices in place of using tobacco. The assembly for grades 4-5 continues to focus on healthy choices and graphically describes the effects of tobacco use on the heart, lungs, stomach and circulatory system. Through humor, interactive skits, and factual information, students engage with Plumkin and leave with a clear message about the negative impact of smoking.

The Got Milk? Gravity Tour brought a tobacco education and prevention message to more than 10,000 secondary students at Mira Mesa, Crawford, Madison, University City, and Point Loma High Schools in March. Through extreme sports activities such as skateboarding, rollerblading, and BMX biking, athletes brought the message of the dangers of tobacco use and the importance of making healthy choices. As the athletes performed incredible feats, the emcee delivered facts illustrating the negative effects and dangers of tobacco use. In a Trivia Contest following the performances, students had the opportunity to win prizes such as t-shirts and skateboards by correctly answering tobacco-related questions.
