Serra High School’s Unarmed Drill Exhibition Team is the best in the nation. The team took first place at the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) National Competition in Pensacola, Florida in April. Once each year, the Navy evaluates the most outstanding NJROTC units located around the world for two intense days of academic, athletic and drill competition. Led by Cadet Lieutenant Beret Deweese and commanded by Cadet Lieutenant Errol Perez, Serra’s team stunned the crowd and the judges with their precision and enthusiasm. The 35 members of the Serra National Team are now recognized as the best high school NJROTC drill team in the world.

The Public Service Announcement (PSA) created by students in Jon Rex’s Video Production class at Kearny High School of Digital Media and Design won “First Place High School in San Diego County” in KGTV Channel 10’s “Come Clean San Diego” campaign. Channel 10 News met with the winners on Thursday, May 4, and presented each student with a $500 scholarship and certificate. The PSA, first presented at the May 23 Padres games, will be shown at future games.

Emir Dodd, preschool student in Phoebe Bishop’s Visually Impaired class at Lindbergh/Schweitzer, received first prize in his age group at the California Transcribers and Educators of the Visually Handicapped (CTEVH) conference held in Anaheim. His prize was awarded for both artistic merit and use of the conference theme, “Focus on the Future: Preparing for Life.” The title of his artwork is “Fire Truck Man, Policeman, Garbage Man, Teacher, Chef.” Emir stated, “When I’m 16, I want to do all this stuff.”

The Madison High School Robotics Team again proved that they are serious about competing at a world class level. The Madison Robotics “Devil Duckies” team received the Engineering Inspiration Award, the Imagery Award, and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at the For Inspirational and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition, Southern California Region, held at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood in March. Winning these three prestigious awards earned the team an invitation to The Championship in Atlanta, the final and largest event of the national robotics competitions. |
