Four students and a staff member from Crawford High Educational Complex School of Law and Business (LAB) joined a group of forty-four educators and students from San Diego State University (SDSU) on the trip of a lifetime to Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa. The trip was part of SDSU's Alternative Spring Break Program, sponsored by Dr. Shirley Weber, former SDCS board member. This was the first international trip for the Crawford students, which was arranged by LAB Counselor Debra Holmes-Brown. "I've been to Africa many times. It's a life changing experience," she said. The primary purpose of the trip was to learn from the cultures of Africa. The students participated in several projects including the National Centre for Self Knowledge Student Forum, the Women Inc. conference at Witwatersrand University, and volunteering at the Ithuteng Trust-an orphanage that prides itself in the fact that 100% of its students pass their exit exam each year. In addition, MTV toured with the group to highlight socially responsible spring break activities. The trip was so successful that LAB is planning to make it an annual event. "I am so glad my students had this experience," reported LAB Principal Monique Robertson. "It's one thing to talk about different countries in social studies. It's an entirely different thing to experience another country firsthand."

The students of Bayview Terrace Elementary School celebrated the school's 2nd Annual Hawaiian Publishing Party in April. The day is a culmination of K-5 students learning the different steps of the writing process, which include brainstorming, producing several rough drafts, and selecting a piece to revise/edit for publication. It is centered on the joy of writing and sharing that writing with friends and families. The entire school dressed in Hawaiian outfits and walked out to the grass field to share one of their published pieces with another grade level. Parents are encouraged to attend the event. Food, drinks and prizes are given to all participants. According to first grade Teacher Ryan Kissel, "Bayview Terrace's Hawaiian Publishing Party is an extremely enjoyable occasion that demonstrates that learning to write can be fun."

Green Elementary Academic/Athletic Magnet held its Junior Olympics in March. The Olympics started in true Olympic style, with an Opening Ceremony presenting the countries of the world with dance and costume. Paul Greer, the sub-four miler, was the honored inspirational speaker and participated in a "mock" press conference with the fifth grade students. He answered questions posed by journalism students and shared stories about his athletic career. The week's events included throwing, jumping, team relays and short and long distance races. The fifth grade students celebrated their last year at Green by competing on Patrick Henry High School's track.

Students from Crawford, Kearny and San Diego High Educational Complex schools and High Tech High were interviewed as part of a special two-part report on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" about public education in America, which aired on Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12. Bill and Melinda Gates and Oprah Winfrey visited the San Diego High Educational Complex in March and sat down with nine local students to learn first-hand about their experiences at the small career-themed high schools that opened their doors in 2004. Excerpts from their discussion were broadcast nationally on the April 12 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Mission Bay High School art students are seeing the world through rose-colored glasses - lavender and blue, too - thanks to Blick Art Materials in Little Italy. Each student received a $25 Blick's gift certificate as a 'thank you' for painting Beatles record album covers that were donated to a Beatles-themed fundraiser for ArtsBusXpress. The project was led by Mission Bay High art teacher Marian Palmieri, in collaboration with Patty Smith, owner of Arts Expressions Gallery. Every student painting sold at $150 launched another fieldtrip bus for San Diego schoolchildren to discover music, theatre, dance, art and museums.

The mission of San Diego City Schools is to improve student achievement by supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.
