Two School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) staff members have been named recipients of awards by the California Music Educators Association-Southern Board Section (CMEA-SBS). SCPA Principal Liz Laughlin was selected as the "High School Administrator" of the year. This award goes to an administrator who actively supports, values, and advocates for music education for all students. SCPA Teacher Tamara Paige was selected to receive the "Orchestra Educator Award," which goes to the outstanding orchestra director at the middle or high school level. Both Liz and Tamara will be recognized at the Fortissimo Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 25. Their names will be forwarded to the CMEA state board for consideration for next year's state award.

Marston Middle School Principal Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Cook has been selected as the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 18 "Administrator of the Year" in the Middle Grades category and Jackson Elementary School Vice Principal Minerva Johnson has been selected "Co-Administrator of the Year" in the Elementary category. Betsy and Minerva will be honored at the "Honoring Our Own" awards dinner on Wednesday, May 3, at the Sheraton San Diego Resort and Marina. Chief Administrative Officer José Betancourt was honored with the "Excellence in Leadership" award by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Hispanic Scholarship Council at the Fiesta de las Estrellas (Festival of the Stars) fundraiser for The Preuss School held Thursday, April 13. The Hispanic Scholarship Council is dedicated to creating educational opportunities through scholarships for young men and women of great promise but limited resources.

California Troops to Teachers recently announced their 2006 Teachers of the Year. Four retired veterans who utilized the federal Troops to Teachers (TTT) program to enter new careers as teachers were named, including Clay Elementary School Teacher William Jay. William was selected 2006 Teacher of the Year in the Elementary School category. He will be honored, along with the other three finalists, at the TTT awards banquet taking place on Saturday, May 29, at the Town and Country Hotel and Convention Center in San Diego.

Greg Perez, from Labor Compliance, and Philip Teates, from Euclid Elementary School, are the March winners of the district's Recycling Office recycling contest. Greg and Philip each received two complimentary dinners at El Torito, a conservation fund magnet and a "No Styrofoam" mug. Interested in participating in the contest? Jonathan Ton, principal at Montgomery Middle School, has been nominated for the "People's Choice Award" in the category of education to be presented at the third annual Asia Heritage Awards luncheon and ceremony on Thursday, May 18, at the University of San Diego, Joan Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. The organization's mission is to honor those individuals' work and integrity, their embrace of cultural differences, their accomplishments and achievements and their inspiration to others. |
