Several San Diego Unified School District schools are among the
304 California public schools being honored by the state’s business community. Bird Rock, Darnall Charter, Dingeman,
Explorer Charter, Hearst, Jerabek, Pacific Beach and Perry elementary schools have been named to the California Business
for Education Excellence (CBEE) / Just for the Kids-California (JKTK-CA) Honor Roll for 2006. The schools were selected
based on high academic achievement and tremendous progress in closing achievement gaps. CBEE/JKTK-CA reviews the student
achievement data for every public elementary, middle and high school in California. Schools are selected by
carefully analyzing academic performance for each school. An awards dinner recognizing the Honor Roll schools in
Southern California will be held November 16 in Los Angeles. For more information, visit the website at

Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has awarded a $2500
Toolbox for Education grant to the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in support of the school’s
Learning Garden. The Learning Garden is an opportunity to develop two previously undeveloped sections of school grounds
into a natural habitat that encourages studies in science, art, math and English. Student
teams will research, design and create the garden, with guidance from faculty. This outdoor classroom will become
the center of an interdisciplinary curriculum that enhances learning, beautifies the campus and develops practical
skills and teamwork for the student gardeners. |
