Jade Pak, third grade teacher at Nye Elementary, has been nominated for the 2006 Disney Teacher Award. Pak joins an elite group of teachers from across the country who have been recognized by their communities. Established in 1989, the Disney Teacher Awards program honors teachers whose approaches exemplify creativity in teaching and who inspire a joy of learning in their students. The honorees will be announced in late spring and celebrated at an awards gala in July. During the gala, four honorees will be selected as Outstanding Teachers and one will be named the 2006 Disney Teacher of the Year.

Katrina won two tickets to the Maritime Museum and Jerri won two tickets for a Hornblower Bay Cruise. Interested in participating in the contest? Summer Catarius, social studies and language arts teacher at Marston Middle School, and Carmen Munnelly, social studies teacher at De Portola Middle School, were recently nominated for the California League of Middle School's Educator of the Year Award. They will be honored at a dinner on December 13 for being selected as one of the 10 best middle school teachers in San Diego County.

Katy Nagy, Marston Middle School’s library/media teacher is a newly published author. The Continuum Encyclopedia of Young Adult Literature includes threes articles written by Mrs. Nagy. Her articles include the biographies and notable work of three authors dedicated to writing adolescent literature: Robin Jarvis, Pam Ryan Munoz and Gloria Whelan.

The Bird Rock Community Council recently presented a $10,335 check to Bird Rock Elementary School. The funds were raised during the Council's 2005 Taste of Bird Rock event held on July 14, 2005. A second check of $3,445 was presented to Brooklyn Elementary School to show the commitment of the Bird Rock Community to neighborhoods other than its own.

On December 3, the students, parents and staff of Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary School, Writing and Multimedia Publishing Magnet School, were recognized by members of the African American Community for the extraordinary gains made by the school this past year in the Academic Performance Index (API). Principal Bonnie Remington accepted the Urban League's 4th Annual Best Academic Practices Schools for African American Students Silver Medal at the Bayview Baptist Church, MLK Cultural Center, San Diego.
