Central Offices Closed During Winter Break
Due to the six-day work year reduction, the Eugene Brucker Education Center (Ed Center) and all other central offices will be closed from December 20, 2004, until January 3, 2005. With the exception of a few already identified employees, no one will be allowed to enter the Ed Center during this time as there will be no power in the building. Please plan ahead if you need to meet with Human Resources, Health and Welfare Benefits, Accounting, Payroll, or other Ed Center departments, as access will not be available during Winter Break.

Teddy Bear Drive
San Diego City Schools is once again participating in the countywide teddy bear drive to benefit Children's Hospital. Last year, staff and students filled a school bus with more than 1,300 donated teddy bears. This year, the goal is to fill two buses. Organized by School Police, the drive will run from December 1-7. You can drop off a new teddy bear at any school or the School Police Office at the Education Center. The Transportation Office will then pick up the bears between December 8-10. We will join other law enforcement agencies on December 14 to deliver the bears to Children's Hospital. If you have any questions, please contact Becki Thome at (619) 725-7000.

Help Sought to Implement School Recycling Programs
The district's Recycling Office is looking for volunteers to assist in implementing environmental clubs and recycling programs in our elementary, middle and high schools. This is an innovative program that educates students about recycling and provides financial benefits to the schools. Students will learn how to operate a beverage container recycling program and keep the revenue from the sale of materials, educate their campus about recycling, and monitor paper bins for contamination. Volunteers are asked to facilitate eight monthly 45-minute meetings during the school year, where they will lead an environmental awareness activity (activities to be provided), check on the recycling program and help students maximize recycling on campus. Training, materials and recycling bins will be provided by the Recycling Office. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Andrea Eaton at (858) 627-7376 or acalbow@sandi.net.

Community Spirit Challenge Food Drive
Schools can earn money for technology grants by participating in a community service project many already organize each year- a food drive for the San Diego Food Bank! Time Warner Cable's Community Spirit Challenge rewards the top elementary, middle and high schools that collect the most food by November 30, 2004. These top schools will each win a $5,000 technology grant. The top school overall will also win a pizza party from Sammy's Woodfired Pizza. Winners are determined by the total weight of non-perishable food collected divided by the number of students enrolled in the school. Download lesson plans tied to food collection for Grades K-12 or register online. For more information, contact Amanda McCarthy at 1-866-350-3663.
Nominate Prized Principals
KyXy and Point Loma Nazarene University would like to acknowledge the administrators who govern San Diego schools through the Prize Principal Program, and they are looking for your nominations. Both principals and vice principals are eligible for recognition, and one winner will be announced each month through May. Winners will receive a plaque and a party with their staff.

Support Families with Letters to Our Troops
National Family Week will be celebrated during the week of Thanksgiving, November 21-27, 2004, and teachers and students can get involved now. A webpage, www.nationalfamilyweek.org, created by the Alliance for Children and Families provides a variety of materials, including the opportunity for visitors to show support for our troops by submitting letters of thanks. Teachers can use this tool to enhance a better understanding of grammar and composition skills, international issues and family dynamics. Participating schools will receive free posters and brochures. View the Response Form. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Krauss at 1-800-221-3726 x3601 or skrauss@alliance1.org.
