Student Salutes
Balboa Park Art Box Show
On Friday, August 13, the San Diego Art Institute in Balboa Park held an opening reception for a special art box show, featuring San Diego City Schools (SDCS) fifth grade student artwork. The reception marked the start of a two-week-long public showing, which included artwork from 24 students who participated in the SDCS Balboa Park Program. Three students also received juror's choice awards.
Davidson Scholarship Awarded to La Jolla High Student
Harish Khandrika of La Jolla High School was recently awarded a $25,000 scholarship by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development in recognition of his project, "Analysis of X-Rays from the Core of Radio Galaxy Centaurus A." Harish proved the existence of a super-massive black hole and developed computer scripts to be used by astrophysicists to expedite future research into the laws of physics. The young physicist finds his work challenging because he must apply logic, intuition and imagination to find answers. His accomplishments include presenting at the Regional and International Science Fairs and the 2003 New Zealand National Science Fair as well as receiving numerous awards, including the 2004 La Jolla Foundation Scholarship, first place in the 2003 National Exploravision Awards and the 2003 Seuss Scholarship. As a Davidson Fellow, Harish will use his scholarship to further develop his talents at the University of California, Berkeley.
Letters About Literature Contest Awards Preuss Student
In May 2004, Katrina Wong of the Preuss School, UCSD, was selected as a finalist in the Letters About Literature Contest, sponsored by the California Center for the Book. To enter, Katrina wrote a letter to Patricia McCormick, author of Cut. Students (Grades 4-12) are invited to participate in this year's 2005 Letters About Literature Contest by writing a letter to the author of an inspiring book of their choosing. Student Film Takes Top Honors
Two Point Loma High students, Jesse Brunt and Tyler Knell, both in Larry Zeiger's film class, produced a short film, "24 Hours 'til Christmas" which has received the distinction of being screened at numerous film award festivals, including the IVIE Awards, Emmy Awards (Regional), the Imperial Beach Film Festival, the San Diego Film Festival, and the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival. In Los Angeles, they were the only two high school students selected out of the over 400 films screened. In addition, the City of San Diego has hired Jesse and Tyler to do an environmental commercial.
Students Present Findings at Scripps Research Institute
Over the summer, 24 local high school students, 6 undergraduates and 7 science teachers participated in internships with the Scripps Research Institute, conducting hands-on research over the course of eight weeks. Four (4) students from San Diego City Schools, Gloria Huong of the Preuss School, UCSD, Boris Patlis of Scripps Ranch High, Alyea Ally of Mira Mesa High, and Hena Din of University City High, presented their findings at Scripps on Friday, August 13, 2004. The aspiring scientists also shared their overall impressions of the summer internship and how it impacted their career plans and goals.
Westfield Receives Singing Ovation
Students from Benchley/Weinberger Elementary wrote and performed a song announcing the grand opening of the food court at Westfield Mall. Westfield donated $2,500 to their school.
