Salutes
Two
of our district's high school students have been named the 2002 San
Diego County Scholarship Award recipients by Nordstrom at its "Time
to Celebrate" fundraiser for Childhelp USA, an organization
dedicated to combating child abuse. The students, Varaporn Chinnapong
from Mission Bay High School and Laurence Evans from
Point Loma High School, will receive $10,000 scholarships to
be disbursed over four years at an accredited college-level institution.
Varaporn was featured in the Volunteer Recruitment video developed
by the district's Partnerships in Education program two years ago.
She was part of a student team at Mission Bay High School which developed
a website for the charitable organization Harvest for the Hungry as
a service learning project.
Hage Elementary 4th grader April Amezquita
recently won first place for her artwork in the International Aviation
Art Contest.
Mira Mesa High School student Giang-Tien
Chau earned a perfect score of 800 on the SAT math test.
Mira Mesa seniors Jennifer Huynh and
Nathaniel Cruz were recently honored by the Allied Gardens
Optimist Club for their leadership and community service.
Mira Mesa's Air Force Junior Officer Training
Class (AFJROTC) Unarmed Fancy Drill Team won four awards and made
it to the overall sweepstakes for the Chaparral Drill Meet. There
were 22 teams participating. The AFJROTC group also did extremely
well at a December tournament, picking up a total of ten awards. The
high school's marching band, the Sapphire Sound, also had a
remarkable season and is now ranked #4 in the state.
La Jolla High School sophomore Dorian
Mattrey won a $5,000 scholarship and two tickets to the Super
Bowl from Qualcomm as part of a competition asking local students
to develop creative ways to use wireless technology to enhance the
game of football. Qualcomm will also provide a $10,000 award to the
school's science and math departments.
Fellow Viking Martha Hurtado won the essay
contest for Future Educators of America. She'll receive paid expenses
for the national conference in Florida next month.
The school's Girls' Junior Water Polo team
won the recent county finals and will now go play in a tournament
in Italy this summer! Good luck, or as they say in Italy, buona fortuna!
The Viking's Varsity Coed Cheer team placed
1st at regionals earlier this month, beating out the national champs
from Mater Dei. |
