Students in the pre-engineering class at Kearny High School's Construction Tech Academy are getting hands-on when it comes to understanding structural forces! The 9th grade class recently completed a four-week building project using a computer-based bridge building program to design a bridge and test its structural load. Two bridges survived a load of 228pounds or more, including Robert Mitchell-Sedillo's (see photo) design. Students were graded on design plans, project budget and construction. The project was fully cross-curriculum, integrating math, physics, pre-engineering and English.

Construction Tech students also recently toured the new ballpark site, (see photo) and met firsthand with ballpark executives, project managers and project supervisors about the whole project and how all the people and projects come together.

Students at Horace Mann Middle School were "bowled over" as well last week. More than 1,400 students were treated to visits from NFL stars including the Chargers' Marcellus Wiley, Terry Charles, Josh Norman and Seth Buford as part of Qualcomm's NFL Alumni Tech for Kids program. Players met with students to stress the importance of education, and how learning about the Internet and technology can make a positive difference in their future. Company sponsors contributed new and almost-new computers, printers, a digital camera and software for Mann's computer lab. The school also received a $10,000 check from Qualcomm.

The football theme carried over to Patrick Henry High School last week, as it joined with the Ricky Williams Foundation to host the Celebrity/Pop Warner Football Game. Celebrities on hand to coach the Pop Warner kids included Williams (a Henry alum), Junior Seau, Marshall Faulk, Brian Urlacher, Snoop Dogg and the US Surgeon General. The halftime presentation included the retiring of Williams' PHHS jersey and performances by the cheer squad.

About a dozen NFL players joined Miss America Ericka Harold for a special visit to Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary last week, courtesy of the Special Olympics organization. (photo gallery) The visitors "played" fantasy football with all of the Special Education students out on the playground and provided autographs. The players also made visits to Carson Elementary and San Diego High School as part of the pre-Super Bowl festivities.

More than 40 students were invited to an exclusive NFL Experience party courtesy of Food Services' Campus Cafe program and Pepsi Cola. Drawings for four-packs of tickets were held ateach secondary school, with winners allowed to bring friends or family to tag along at Pepsi Night at the NFL Experience January 22nd. Unlike typical evenings with attendance hitting the 25,000 mark, Pepsi Night was invitation only and decidedly "intimate" at 4,000 guests. Kern Huerta, University City High School's winner, shared the experience with his dad. Students entered the contest through their Campus Cafe and also won prizes donated by Gatorade, Frito-Lay and Kelloggs.

The mission of San Diego City Schools is to improve student achievement by supporting teaching and learning in the classroom.
