Student Salutes
La Jolla Students Shine
Students at La Jolla High have recently received several awards from the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), National Ocean Science Bowl (NOSE) and National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NoBCChE). In the 2005 Winter Red Eye 24-Hour Film Competition, sponsored by SDCOE, "Video Crew One" took the gold with a short finished video (no more than 6 minutes long). Crew members include Carlos Mason, Max Halberg, Chris Colachis, Giorgio Gentile, Kristin E. Link and Seth Biberstei. Kathy Renda was the Staff Crew Leader. At NOSE's La Jolla Surf Bowl at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography on February 26, Coach Lee Decker and his team: Jennifer Bell, Venzel Hammershaimb, Doug Hooton, Zach Rudolph, and Christian Schwarz, took first place in the Southern California/Arizona region for the fifth consecutive year. The NoBCChE Senior Team 1 and Team 2 placed first and second, respectively, in the regional competition and will go on to the Nationals in Orlando, Florida during Spring Break. The Junior Team also took second place at the regional competition. Senior Team 1 members are Praveen Subramani, Patricia Odero, Dora E. Arnold and Michael Savvas. Senior Team 2 members are Julian Sonderegger, Shanly Hopkins, Mata Kareemah, Darren Green and Kenneth Martin. Junior Team members are Nicholas Hanoian, Nicolas Sonderegger and Ashley Serna. Their advisor is Walter Fairley, Vice-Principal at La Jolla High.
Henry High Student Receives Kyoto Scholarship
David P. Daniels of Henry High School recently received a $10,000 scholarship at the Fourth Annual Kyoto Laureate Symposium, a gala celebrating outstanding human achievement. David will be attending Stanford University in the fall. College-bound students were selected for this award based on academic excellence in the fields of advanced technology, basic sciences, or arts and philosophy.
