8th Grade Stock Market Wizards
Harriet Tubman Village Charter School 8th graders Robert Asperin and Tony Nieves recently took first place in the San Diego Union-Tribune Stock Market Game for the Middle School Division (out of 52 teams). This simulated investing experience allows teams to start the 10-week game with $100,000 in their accounts, and students research companies and invest in stock following the rules of 'real-world' investing. Robert and Tony outperformed the S&P 500 by over 23% during the period of the game, ending with a winning balance of $127,673. This amount was good enough for a ranking of 9 out of 574 total teams participating, including high school and adult levels. Tubman teacher David Sciarretta took first place in the adult division, finishing with $122,169.

Winners of the When Not to Keep a Secret Contest
Excerpt from "Counseling Corner," February 1, 2005
Thanks to a grant from the American Psychiatric Foundation, students in Grades 9 and 10 were encouraged to participate in a project, "When Not To Keep a Secret" Essay Contest. This project challenges adolescents' sense of mortality and gives permission to break a confidence, when the confidence is life threatening. It is a tool that can be used to model appropriate disclosure skills. In particular, it is designed to promote an overall awareness in students that violent talk can lead to violent behavior. We are pleased to announce the following three San Diego City School winners: Emily Partridge, Grade 9, Scripps Ranch High School; Vilaiporn Thanone, Grade 10, Serra High School; and Dash Wise, Grade 10, La Jolla High School. Students will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Westfield Shopping Malls and a chance to compete at the State and Federal levels.
