Carson Elementary is a "Cool School"
Carson Elementary was recently recognized by San Diego Channel 8 News for their environmental programs. The wetland habitat at the San Diego river-mouth is an ideal outdoor learning experience for these elementary students, who are on a mission to restore the wetlands, and they have the shovels to prove it! A six-week educational program provided by Aquatic Adventures encouraged these students to restore their environment. The Channel 8 News Cool School Program is offered jointly through Channel 8 and the County Office of Education.

Food Services Adds to Holiday Cheer
The third annual Food Services Toy Drive in December was more successful than ever before. Ten families from our district were selected to receive the many toys, books, games, bicycles and sports equipment that were generously donated by employees of the Food Services Department as well as by employees from throughout the district. One family responded gratefully that all they had was $20 to buy their children Christmas gifts.

Organized by Shirley Cabri-Rumrill and her staff Violeta Gonzales and Maria Lagace, the toy drive utilized many resources. Victor Parra, Classified Man of the Year, and his staff in the Food Services Operations Center, assembled bicycles, trucked and stored the toys and finally distributed them to the ten schools. Cabri-Rumrill noted that "As in the past two years our Food Services staff, along with the Purchasing Department has been extremely generous. This year everyone really out did themselves. We were thrilled to bring holiday cheer to those special families in need."

Food Services Director, Gary Petill was especially pleased with the results. "We are happy to be able to make a difference for these families that are less fortunate than our own and would hope that the spirit of giving continues throughout the year." Pictured here are Marlin Ormsbee, Jesus Garcia, Maria Lagace, Shirley Cabri-Rumrill, Victor Parra, Violeta Gonzales and Rod Lagace as well as Chesterton Elementary Principal Karen Mooney and Food Services Driver Marlin Ormsbee.
