Budget Update
The next Board of Education budget workshop is scheduled for this Friday, March 7, at the Ed Center. The workshop will be televised on ITV, Channel 16, and available as a web cast from most district school and work sites at http://www.sandi.net/board/webcast.html. Check www.sandi.net for time and details. Ideas on cost-savings and revenue generation can still be submitted on the About the Budget and Budgeting 2008-09 websites.

Nominations for Site Classified Employees of the Year Due Friday
School sites and district offices are encouraged to nominate a deserving candidate for the 2008 Classified Employee of the Year Adobe PDF awards. A nominee must be a classified employee with at least three years of service in a monthly position. The deadline to submit a nomination petition Adobe PDF is this Friday, March 7, by 5 p.m. Completed petitions should be sent or hand-delivered to Gloria Rangel, Education Center, Room 1241.   • MSTE Masters Program Adds Additional Open House Date
    San Diego Unified, in partnership with the University of San Diego, is developing a new program that will give teachers the opportunity to earn a Masters in Education with a focus on Math, Science and Technology.   • Ed Tech Spring 2008 Teacher Professional Development
    Register now for spring classes and earn district credit. Sessions begin March 25. Classes will focus on two of the EdTech Profile Standards: Standard 9 – using technology in instruction, and Standard 16 – using technology to engage students in their curriculum work.   • Service Learning Training
    Volunteer San Diego is offering On-Site Projects and Reflection training on Thursday, March 13, from 4-6:30 p.m. The training will provide the tools to create successful on-site service projects that focus on environmental education and disaster preparation. Participants will receive free resources and on-going support after completion of the training. Registration fee is $30.   • The Struggle for Social Justice in Education
    Lincoln High School, in collaboration with the Association of Raza Educators (A.R.E.), GEAR UP, and SDSU, will be hosting a free educational conference, The Struggle for Social Justice in Education Adobe PDF, on Saturday, April 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Conference speakers and workshop presenters will address issues of social justice as they relate to the roles of teachers and students in struggling, inside and outside the classroom, against oppression and marginalization within the educational system. Funding Opportunities
Sprint Ahead for Character Education Grants
The Sprint Foundation will award grants to school districts and individual schools to fund the purchase of resource materials, supplies, equipment and software that facilitates and encourages character education among K-12 students. The Sprint Foundation is planning to award up to 75 grants totaling $600,000. The application MS Word deadline is Saturday, April 15.

  • Christopher Columbus Awards for Middle School Students
    The Christopher Columbus Awards challenge middle school students to work in teams of three or four with an adult coach to identify a community problem and apply the scientific method to create an innovative solution. The application deadline is Monday, March 17.

  • Free SAT/ACT Test Preparation Materials

  • Family Histories Essay Program/Competition Postponed
    Due to its relocation to a permanent new home at the NTC Promenade at Liberty Station, the New Americans Museum Adobe PDF is postponing the 2008 Family Histories Essay Competition.     The district’s Student Art Exhibit 2008 will hang in the halls of the Ed Center through Friday, April 11. Art pieces created by elementary, middle and high school students include drawings, paintings, photographs, collages, mixed media, sculptures and ceramics. Students will share their creative projects at a reception on Wednesday, April 9, from 5-7 p.m. Family members, teachers, district staff and the general public are invited to attend.   • Free Red Cross CPR Training
