February is Black History Month

Black History is celebrated during the month of February. Information and teaching resources related to black history are available on the district Black History Month website. In conjunction with Black History month, National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) is held the second Monday in February. This year’s event will take place Monday, February 11. Processing Schedule for Classified New Hires
|
| Effective today, February 4, processing for classified new hires will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, from 8:30-10 a.m., and Fridays, from 8:30-10 a.m., and 1-2 p.m., in Room 1241 at the Ed Center. No appointment is necessary. The following items are needed to process: driver’s license, DMV ID card, or passport; social security card; and TB clearance card. Field Trip Ordering Procedure Now Online
|
|
Beginning today, the Transportation Department is implementing a new electronic Field Trip Ordering Procedure. T-Forms will no longer be used. To order a field trip, simply go to http://transportation.sandi.net/field_trips.html and click on “Request Field Trip Link”. A budget number will be required to book a trip. Each request will be pre-filled with a unique confirmation number that should be referenced in any correspondence with transportation. For information, contact Martin J. Certificated Positions at New Schools

Applications will be accepted through Monday, February 11, for certificated positions at the two new schools opening fall 2008:
- Sherman Elementary (K-5), 450 24th St., 92102, traditional calendar school offering a Spanish language immersion program.
- Innovation Middle School (7-8) (previously the CPMA site), 5095 Arvinels Ave., 92117, traditional calendar school with a focus on integrating 21st century technology, science, math, and engineering into the curriculum.

| Apply Now for Spring Intersession
|
The Spring Intersession program is March 24-April 4. Applications are now being accepted from certificated and classified staff from year-round sites interested in Spring Intersession employment.
- Certificated employees must submit an electronic application by Monday, February 11. Online applications and instructions are posted on the Employment website under "Quick Links". For information, see Admin. Circular 53

- February Purchase Card Trainings
Purchase Card Trainings will be held Thursdays, February 7 and 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Ed Center Auditorium. Employees must attend one training session prior to becoming a district purchase cardholder or approver. School principals, site administrators, financial clerks and secretaries who have not attended training are also encouraged to attend. - Nell Soto Grant Coordinators

- School Site Council (SSC) Training
Improving Student Achievement: Revising your Single Plan for Student Achievement provides in-depth guidance for School Site Council team members. Service-Learning Training for Educators
Volunteer San Diego is offering a series of service-learning trainings. The introductory Service Learning 101 will be offered Tuesday, February 12, from 4-7 p.m. On-Site Service Learning Projects and Reflection will be offered Thursday, March 13; Student Motivation and Character Education on Tuesday, April 15, both from 4-6:30 p.m. Principals, teachers, staff and parents are invited to attend. Fee waivers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for district staff. - Water Conservation Poster Contest
The City of San Diego Water Department is now accepting entries for its Eighth Annual Water Conservation Poster Contest. The entry deadline is Wednesday, March 26. - MoPA Offers Free Programs, Website Resources
The Museum of Photographic Art (MoPA) Exposure program is free to grades 3-8 in Title I schools. The program is also available for a fee to schools not designated as Title 1. In addition, the Collaborative Arts Resources for Education (CARE) Website consists of free California standards-aligned arts-based lesson plans and resources for K-12 educators.
- Deadline for Family Histories Essay Program is February 22
Students in grades 3-12 have until Friday, February 22, to submit essays to the New Americans Immigration Museum and Learning Center (NAIMLC) Annual Family Histories Essay Program. This year’s topic is "Family Histories: Migrants to the United States.” For information, a Teacher’s Guide or student scholarship opportunities, visit www.naimlc.org.

Superintendent-elect Dr. Terry Grier will now be the featured speaker (Mayor Jerry Sanders has been called to jury duty.) at the annual Community Leaders Breakfast sponsored by the Administrators Association of San Diego City Schools.
