New Superintendent Named
|

The Board of Education voted unanimously on January 19 to appoint Dr. Terry Grier as the next Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Grier currently serves as Superintendent for the Guilford County School District in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is scheduled to begin work no later than July 1, 2008. Physical Inventory of All District-Owned Property
|
The district has entered into an agreement with American Appraisal Associates (AAA) to perform a mandatory room-to-room fixed asset inventory of all district-owned equipment at every district site and program/administrative area. This inventory will take place over a five-week period starting the week of January 22. Payroll Direct Deposit
|
Employees can protect pay and eliminate delays that can occur with US mail delivery of pay checks by enrolling in the district’s Direct Deposit Program . Direct deposit offers convenience by eliminating the need to go to a bank, increased dependability by avoiding lost checks, and protection by eliminating the possibility of stolen checks. To begin direct deposit, use this form or pick up a form at the Payroll Department, Room 1150, Ed Center. Allow approximately 30 days for enrollment to be completed.

Apply Now for Spring Intersession
|
The Spring Intersession program is March 24 – April 4. Applications are now being accepted from certificated and classified staff from year-round sites interested in Spring Intersession employment.
- Certificated employees must submit an electronic application by Thursday, January 31. Online applications and instructions are posted on the Employment website under "Quick Links". For information, see Admin. Circular 53

- Classified employees must submit a Scantron application to Ester Victorio, Human Resources, Room 1241, Ed Center, by 5 p.m., Wednesday, February 13. For information, see Admin. Circular 54

Applications submitted on or before the deadlines will be used to determine certificated and classified staffing eligibility for Spring Intersession.

Closure of US Bank Accounts
|
|
Sites should notify Fiscal Control when their final US Bank ASB account no longer has activity and the final statement has been reconciled. Fiscal Control will provide the necessary paperwork so that the US Bank account can be closed. All US Bank ASB accounts must be closed by April 30, 2008. Additionally, Certificates of Deposit and other investment accounts held at banks other than Wells Fargo must be closed upon maturity. New investment accounts are to be opened at Wells Fargo. Important Changes to 403(b) Plans
|
Due to new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations, changes have been made to the district 403(b) plan. Employees with Tax Sheltered Annuity 403(b) plans are encouraged to review the 403(b) information in the Benefits section of the Human Resources website. Regularly check for updates and the list of approved providers as plan documents are revised and companies comply with the new requirements. School Site Teacher of the Year Nominations Due January 31
|
Recognize and honor excellence. Nominations are now being accepted for school site Teachers of the Year . The deadline to submit a nomination form is Thursday, January 31. All nominated teachers will be recognized at a special Day of the Teacher celebration on May 6, 2008. Qualified nominees will have the opportunity to apply to the district-level competition. Reduced Workload Program
|
Interested employees who are or will be age 55 before July 1, 2008, and who are eligible to apply for the Reduced Workload Program must apply by Saturday, March 1. Employees already participating in the program must indicate their intent to continue or end participation for the coming school year by March 1. Participation in the program allows eligible employees to reduce their workload to no less than half-time and continue to receive full benefits and service credit for the STRS retirement plan. January Purchase Card Trainings will be held:
- Thursday, January 24, 10 a.m. to noon, Ed Center Auditorium
- Thursday, January 31, 1-3 p.m., Ed Center Auditorium
Employees must attend training to obtain a district purchase card. If you are a new approver and have not been trained, or if you plan on becoming an approver (or cardholder) at a later date, you must also attend. School principals, site administrators, financial clerks and secretaries who have not attended training are also encouraged to attend. The next series of two-hour trainings on Connect-ED, the web-based outbound communications tool, are scheduled for January 23, 24 and 25, at the Ed Center. Principals and vice-principals not previously trained should plan to attend along with pre-identified central office department managers, supervisors and assistants, IT support, school site secretaries, attendance clerks and site techs. Service Learning 101
|
Service Learning 101 will be held Friday, January 25, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Marina Village Conference Center. Presenters include Bonnie Benard, Jennifer Hamilton and Dr. Ed DeRoche. Cost is $49, which includes materials, breakfast and lunch. A limited number of scholarships are available to district personnel on a first-come, first-served basis.
