Review New Instructional Materials
Teachers, parents and community members are invited to examine instructional materials currently being reviewed for adoption. Materials will be available on Tuesday, January 15, from 3-6 p.m.; Thursday, January 24, from 3-6 p.m.; and Saturday, January 26, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Instructional Media Center. Connect-ED
The next series of two-hour trainings on Connect-ED, the web-based outbound communications tool, are scheduled for January 23, 24 and 25, at the Ed Center. Principals and vice-principals not previously trained should plan to attend along with pre-identified central office department managers, supervisors & assistants, IT support, school site secretaries, attendance clerks and site techs. Professional Development
Service Learning 101 will be held Friday, January 25, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Marina Village Conference Center. Presenters include Bonnie Benard, Jennifer Hamilton and Dr. Ed DeRoche. Cost is $49, which includes materials, breakfast and lunch. A limited number of scholarships are available to district personnel on a first-come, first-served basis. Intel Schools of Distinction
Every year, Intel honors U.S. schools that have demonstrated excellence in math and science education as Intel Schools of Distinction. One elementary, one middle and one high school in each of two categories - math and science - receive $10,000 cash grants and more than $100,000 in products and services from sponsors. Balboa Elementary was the Elementary Math School winner in 2007. The application deadline for 2008 is Thursday, February 14. For information, go to www.intel.com/education.

Buick Invitational Helps Raise Money for Athletics
The Physical Education, Health and Athletics Department is raising funds by selling tickets to the 2008 Buick Invitational PGA Golf Tournament. The presentation, 18 and the Law!, is designed to provide students with helpful information - in a fun medium - about the legal ramifications and responsibilities upon turning 18, the age of majority. Immigration Museum Seeks Outstanding Student Essays
One in five Americans is now an immigrant or the child of an immigrant. The New Americans Immigration Museum and Learning Center’s Annual Family Histories Essay Program is now underway for students in grades 3-12. The deadline to apply is Friday, February 22.
