Open Enrollment Deadline is Friday
The deadline for eligible employees to make changes to medical/dental plans or Flexible Spending Accounts is this Friday, November 30. All open enrollment changes will take effect January 1, 2008. Family Friendly School Certification Trainings

The training sessions for Family Friendly School Adobe PDF Certification have been rescheduled. Sessions will be held the week of December 3 – 7:

  • Diversity Welcoming Course (required) – The First Step to Acceptance (for administrators or representative) on Tuesday, December 4, from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
  • Electives- Choose 2 of 3 below for Certification
    • Producing Family Friendly Communication (for administrators, office staff, PALs, teachers) on Wednesday, December 5, from 1:30 to 4 p.m.
    • Designing a Family Friendly Parent Center (for administrators, office staff, PALs teachers, volunteer coordinators) on Thursday, December 6, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
    • Creating a Family Friendly Office (for administrators, office staff, PALs, teachers) on Friday, December 7, from 9 to 11 a.m.

New Peer to Peer Program for School Site OTBS Positions
School site OTBS employees are encouraged to participate in the new Peer to Peer program (formerly Job Alikes), sponsored by Human Resources and CSEA Chapter 788 OTBS. Peer-to-Peer Program Groups will meet three times and meetings will include networking, sharing of ideas, professional development and other topics of interest. Final Purchase Card Trainings Scheduled this Week
The final mandatory training sessions for current procurement card approvers or cardholders on the district’s new online purchase card program with Wells Fargo Bank are scheduled for Thursday, November 29, and Friday, November 30, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Ed Center Auditorium. Current procurement card accounts will be permanently closed on January 8, 2008. School-based Education Foundation Meeting
The first in a series of meetings for school-based education foundations is scheduled for Thursday, December 6, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., in the Education Center Auditorium. Share Your Expertise, Earn Extra Income
Do you have knowledge that you would like to share with other professionals? The Discover Program is seeking instructors to teach classes to district certificated and classified employees during the Winter Session (January-March 2008). Instructors are paid $43.43/hour for instruction time and $29.31/hour for prep time spent outside of assigned workday. Blues Schoolhouse Program Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The International House of Blues Foundation (IHOBF) invites grades 5 -12 classes to participate in a special Blues Schoolhouse (PDF Adobe PDF) on Friday, January 18, 2008, from 10 a.m. to noon, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Participants will use the words and deeds of Dr. King as an inspiration for creating pieces of visual artwork, spoken word or poetry. C-SPAN StudentCam 2008
Middle and high school students are invited to identify a current political topic of interest and produce a short video documentary which creatively explores an issue while integrating C-SPAN programming. The grand prize is $5,000. Teachers of top students will receive money for digital media equipment for their schools. Entry form is due Monday, December 31. Start a High School Red Cross Club
The San Diego/Imperial Counties chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting an informational meeting on Wednesday, November 28, from 7 to 8 p.m., for high school students and teachers who are interested in starting a Red Cross Club at their school. Great Stories from New Americans
The New Americans Immigration Museum and Learning Center invites district students and teachers to participate in its Annual Family Histories Essay Program. Students in grades 3 - 12 write a three to six page essay on their family’s history of immigration to the United States. The due date for essay submittals is Friday, February 22, 2008. Parent Class Focuses on Academic Success

GenevaLogic Visionary Grants
The goal of the grant is to support K-12 teachers who use computers to inspire their students and achieve their teaching goals by providing classroom software that empowers teachers to mentor students learning on computers, manage student computer activity and effectively interact with students in a technology. The maximum award is $10,000 in resources and technology products. The application deadline is Friday, December 28. For information, visit www.genevalogic.com.

DonorsChoose.Org
DonorsChoose.org collects project proposals from teachers who are seeking funding for educational materials or experiences their students need. Proposals range in cost from hundreds of dollars to the low thousands, and a supporter may choose to give as little or as much as they wish. SCPA Open House for Prospective Students
Prospective students and their families are invited to visit the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) on Saturday, December 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. Visitors will get a campus tour, receive information on the SCPA arts programs, see an excerpt from the school’s production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and meet faculty and staff.
