Special Board Meeting on Saturday

Certificated, Classified Employees Apply Now for Winter Intersession
The winter intersession program is January 7 – 18, 2008. Applications are now being accepted from certificated and classified staff from year-round sites interested in winter intersession employment.
  • Certificated employees must submit an electronic application by Wednesday, October 17. Online applications and instructions Adobe PDF are posted on the Employment website under "Quick Links". For information, call (619) 725-8007.

Applications submitted on or before the deadline will be used to determine certificated and classified staffing eligibility for Winter Intersession.
Position Classification Review for Classified Employees
The annual period for submitting Requests for Position Classification Review Adobe PDF for positions held by incumbents ends Wednesday, October 31. Completed forms with required signatures must be received in Human Resources, Annex 9, no later than October 31. Requests submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Join the CSA Board of Directors
The Community Service Association (CSA) is the district employees' charitable organization that provides funding to nonprofit agencies throughout San Diego County. The CSA Board of Directors has ten members: two administrators, five certificated and three classified employees. Four Board of Director seats (one administrator and three certificated) will become vacant December 31, 2007. School Site Council Training: Building a Cohesive Team
This two-hour training will review the role and responsibilities of the principal and the School Site Council (SSC) in implementing the Single Plan for Student Achievement; provide an overview of parliamentary procedures and bylaws to ensure effective meeting management; and explain updated categorical budget guidelines. Wells Fargo Online Program Webinar
Employees who received an e-mail from Wells Fargo Bank regarding access to its Commercial Electronic Office (CEO) portal should plan to participate in a 30-minute webinar training session in October. Sessions are on Tuesdays, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Thursdays, at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (The Tuesday, October 23 session will be moved to Wednesday, October 24.) Community Resources Enhance Classroom Experience
The following community programs, some free and some requiring a fee, are available to all schools. School sites can consider utilizing discretionary funds, PTA dollars, sponsorships from partners, foundation dollars, etc. to cover any costs.

San Diego Opera Final Dress Rehearsal. Student Night at the Opera provides grade 3-12 students and their chaperones access to the first part of the final dress rehearsal of San Diego Opera main stage productions. Service Learning 101
Service Learning 101 Adobe PDF will be held Tuesday, October 30, from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Marina Village Conference Center. Bonnie Benard, renowned expert in the field of service learning, is the keynote speaker. Registration fee is $49. A limited number of scholarships are available to district personnel on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration deadline is Friday, October 26. More Service Learning Trainings
A series of service-learning trainings that can be taken individually or as a Discover Course for district credit are also scheduled. On-Site Environmental Projects and Reflection will be held Thursday, November 15, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Service-Learning 101 and Student Motivation and Character Education will be held in 2008. Registration fee is $30 per course. A limited number of registration fee waivers are available on a first-come, first-served, basis. Funding Opportunities
Awards for Combining Technology and Reading
The Presidential Award for Reading and Technology honors educators in grades K-12 who are making an outstanding and innovative contribution to the use of technology in reading education. All entrants must be educators who work directly with students ages 5-18 for all or part of the working day. The application Adobe PDF deadline is Thursday, November 15.
$100,000 for College Tuition
The National Vocabulary Championship promotes the value of an enhanced vocabulary to teens across the country by providing free Princeton Review study resources and holding live game show-style events that award college-bound students more than $100,000 in money toward tuition. High school students should go to www.winwithwords.com to take the qualifying exam. The deadline is Friday, November 30.

Photos Needed for Website
The Communications Office is looking for photos to showcase on the front page of the district website. Ideal photos are high resolution, close-up shots with two to three people that highlight positive events in the district. Students must have a signed media release form Adobe PDF on file prior to being featured on the website. Send photos with a brief explanation (site name, names of individuals, event, and contact information) to webmaster@sandi.net.

Airport Hosts Kumeyaay Students Mural Reception
Last year, Kumeyaay fifth grade students created a beautiful landscape mural inspired by contemporary artist David Hockney. The mural is on temporary display at the San Diego International Airport in Terminal 2, Level 1 below American Airlines ticketing.
