Public Forum on NCLB Slated for Tonight
A public forum, sponsored by SDUSD and Congresswoman Susan Davis, to address key issues involving No Child Left Behind
is being held tonight, August 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., in the San Diego High Educational Complex MVA Performing Arts
Theater. Panelists include Superintendent Carl Cohn, County Superintendent Randolph Ward, as well as representatives
from other districts, the PTA, and SDEA. Parents, educators and community members are encouraged to attend. For

Lend a Hand
Wilson Middle School will receive a
$35,000 makeover as part of Volunteer San Diego’s annual
Hands
On San Diego event. Wilson was one of seven school projects nationwide chosen to be a part of Hands On Schools
2007, a new program that aims to reestablish schools as the focal points of communities. Wilson’s transformation
will take place September 22 and 23. Hundreds of volunteers are needed, especially on Sunday, to complete tasks
such as painting the buildings, planting new landscape and beautifying the fence and field areas. For information

Media, and Techniques for the Classroom (1 credit) Wednesdays, September 12-October 24, from 4 – 6 p.m., at Mission Bay
High School Course provides hands on opportunity for instructors to learn the basic elements and principles of design. Emphasis will be on developing fine art lesson plans that use a variety of materials and follow the California State Visual Art Standards.
The Art
of a Creative Kindergarten/1st Grade Classroom: Projects and Strategies for the Literacy Block (1 credit) Wednesdays, September
12-November 7, from 4 - 7 p.m., at the IMC.
Learn how to incorporate the visual arts into the K/1st grade literacy block. Activities are teacher-friendly and
based on California Standards for the Teaching Profession and Katie Wood Ray’s About the Authors, Writing Workshop
with our Youngest Writers.
BTSA Offers Help to Obtain Professional Clear Credential
All new and out-of-state teachers who need to obtain a
professional clear credential and all new Level I Special Education teachers should plan to attend a
Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) Induction Office Open House
on either Wednesday, September 5, or Thursday, September 6, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the

2008 Best Buy Teach Awards
Applications are now available for the 2008 Best Buy Teach Awards,
which reward innovative use of technology in K-12 classrooms. This year, more than 1,500 schools will receive Teach Awards
of $2,000 to $10,000. Last year, San Diego Unified received the $250,000 National Best Buy Teach Award. The deadline to

The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) High School Physics

The August 22 edition of
the San Diego Union-Tribune featured stories about two unique programs in San Diego Unified. One
article highlighted the new
Mandarin Chinese language programs beginning this fall. Barnard Elementary is opening the district's first Mandarin
Chinese magnet program and the School of Business at San Diego High will offer Mandarin classes for the first time
when school begins.
The second article
focused on the gardening projects at Crawford and Morse High Schools that teach urban teens how to grow and prepare
their own healthful foods.
