Public Forum on NCLB Slated for Tonight
A public forum, sponsored by SDUSD and Congresswoman Susan Davis, to address key issues involving No Child Left Behind is being held tonight, August 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., in the San Diego High Educational Complex MVA Performing Arts Theater. Panelists include Superintendent Carl Cohn, County Superintendent Randolph Ward, as well as representatives from other districts, the PTA, and SDEA. Refresher Course on Office Depot Online Ordering
All Office Depot “Approvers” or “Requesters” are invited to attend an upcoming refresher course about online ordering. Lend a Hand
Wilson Middle School will receive a $35,000 makeover as part of Volunteer San Diego’s annual Hands On San Diego event. Wilson was one of seven school projects nationwide chosen to be a part of Hands On Schools 2007, a new program that aims to reestablish schools as the focal points of communities. Wilson’s transformation will take place September 22 and 23. Hundreds of volunteers are needed, especially on Sunday, to complete tasks such as painting the buildings, planting new landscape and beautifying the fence and field areas. September Discover Program Courses
Art, Media, and Techniques for the Classroom (1 credit) Wednesdays, September 12-October 24, from 4 – 6 p.m., at Mission Bay High School Course provides hands on opportunity for instructors to learn the basic elements and principles of design. Emphasis will be on developing fine art lesson plans that use a variety of materials and follow the California State Visual Art Standards.

The Art of a Creative Kindergarten/1st Grade Classroom: Projects and Strategies for the Literacy Block (1 credit) Wednesdays, September 12-November 7, from 4 - 7 p.m., at the IMC. Learn how to incorporate the visual arts into the K/1st grade literacy block. Activities are teacher-friendly and based on California Standards for the Teaching Profession and Katie Wood Ray’s About the Authors, Writing Workshop with our Youngest Writers.

BTSA Offers Help to Obtain Professional Clear Credential
All new and out-of-state teachers who need to obtain a professional clear credential and all new Level I Special Education teachers should plan to attend a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) Induction Office Open House Adobe PDF on either Wednesday, September 5, or Thursday, September 6, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Instructional Media Center (IMC), Building G. 2008 Best Buy Teach Awards
Applications are now available for the 2008 Best Buy Teach Awards, which reward innovative use of technology in K-12 classrooms. This year, more than 1,500 schools will receive Teach Awards of $2,000 to $10,000. Last year, San Diego Unified received the $250,000 National Best Buy Teach Award. Awards of Up to $500 for Unique Classroom Teachers
The Kids in Needs Foundation offers $100 to $500 in funding opportunities for K-12 classroom teachers who have innovative, commendable ideas. Applications are available online through Sunday, September 30. For information, visit www.kidsinneed.net .
$1,000 Awards for Innovative Math, Science Programs
The mission of Toshiba America Foundation is to promote quality science and mathematics education in U.S. schools. K-6 teachers are eligible to apply to the Grants Program for Science & Math Education Adobe PDF. The application deadline is Monday, October 1.
AAPT High School Physics Teacher Grant
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) High School Physics Grant is designed to encourage teachers to experiment and improve their teaching practices. Awards range from $100 to $500. The application deadline is Thursday, November 1.

Marshall Middle School Open House
The new Thurgood Marshall Middle School, which opens its doors to students on September 4, is having an open house for the community on Tuesday, August 28, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The school’s address is 9700 Avenue of Nations and is accessed via Pomerado Road in Scripps Ranch. In the News
The August 22 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune featured stories about two unique programs in San Diego Unified. One article highlighted the new Mandarin Chinese language programs beginning this fall. Barnard Elementary is opening the district's first Mandarin Chinese magnet program and the School of Business at San Diego High will offer Mandarin classes for the first time when school begins.
The second article focused on the gardening projects at Crawford and Morse High Schools that teach urban teens how to grow and prepare their own healthful foods.
