SDUSD and Congresswoman Susan Davis are sponsoring a public forum to address key issues involving No Child Left Behind
in preparation for the upcoming re-authorization. The forum will take place on Monday, August 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.,
in the San Diego High Educational Complex MVA Performing Arts Theater. Panelists include Superintendent Carl Cohn,
County Superintendent Randolph Ward, as well as representatives from other districts, the PTA, and SDEA. Parents,

Central Enrollment Center Expands Hours
The pilot
Central Enrollment Center,
located at Roosevelt Middle School, is expanding its hours for the remaining two weeks of operation. The schedule is as
follows:
The center can register students new to the district, multiple siblings and students attending a different school from
the previous year. Families also have the option to enroll at their neighborhood schools. The center’s final day

With the start of school just around
the corner, it was a busy weekend on local TV for San Diego Unified staff. On Saturday, district Executive Chef Mark
Mendoza was the guest of Rory Devine on KNSD NBC 7/39's "NBC 7/39 News This Morning." Mark talked about the new,
healthy food choices in the district. On Sunday, Area 3 Superintendent Dr. Rich Cansdale was a
featured guest on the
KUSI "Good Morning San Diego" show. Anchor Kristen Cusato’s interview with Dr. Cansdale focused on the Central
Enrollment Center. Sunday night, Area 5 Superintendent Dr. Delfino Alemán talked about school starting
with Marco Serrano live on the 6 p.m. news "Noticias San Diego" on KBNT-TV. And Monday morning, Eddie
Caballero, administrator of the Parent, Community and Student Engagement program, talked about the Central
Enrollment Center live on "Despierta San Diego," KBNT-TV's morning show. KBNT's Sunday night news will
be featuring SDUSD staff for the next two weeks, plus a call-in "El 17 Contigo" segment scheduled on the
6 p.m. news Wednesday, August 29.
Zangle Receives Upgrade
Beginning today, August 13, all Zangle users will use Zangle v.2007.1. This upgraded version offers several modifications

2008 Best Buy Teach Awards
Applications are now available for the 2008 Best Buy Teach Awards,
which reward innovative use of technology in K-12 classrooms. This year, more than 1,500 schools will receive Teach Awards
of $2,000 to $10,000. Last year, San Diego Unified received the $250,000 National Best Buy Teach Award. The deadline to
submit an application is September 30.

Up to $15K to Improve Schools, Communities My Hometown Helper helps local groups make a difference in
their own community. Imagine seeding a community garden, putting a new scoreboard up at the local high school, or
restocking a school library with new/additional books. Interested applicants can
apply online for a one-time grant from $500 to $15,000 to
help fund a project. The application deadline is September 30.

Learn what music students can use legally at a workshop
being held Wednesday, August 22, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., at the SD County Office of Education. Using Garageband on
a Mac or Audacity (free for Mac/PC), students can edit clips and create entire soundtracks for their videos and
podcasts. Workshop fee is $75 and includes one music volume of your choice. Attendees can bring two students.
